Donald Trump Jr. recently weighed on the controversy surrounding 22 Senate Republicans who voted in favor of the Ukraine aid bill, calling for those who supported it to be replaced. The $95 billion foreign aid package has been heavily criticized for prioritizing international interests, such as the war in Ukraine and Israel, over pressing domestic issues like the ongoing border crisis.
Trump Jr. posted on X, praising the only two members of the Senate GOP leadership that voted in opposition of the bill. However, the former president’s son denounced the remaining Republican leaders in the upper chamber who “stood with Democrats,” calling for them to be removed from their positions.
“Only 2 members of Senate GOP Leadership opposed the Ukraine First funding bill- @SteveDaines & @barrassoforwyo.The rest of GOP Leadership stood with DEMOCRATS to send billions more to Ukraine- @LeaderMcConnell, @SenJohnThune, @SenCapito & @joniernst,” Trump Jr. wrote on X.
The complete list of GOP senators who voted alongside Democrats is as follows: Sens. John Boozman (R-AR), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Susan Collins (R-ME), John Cornyn (R-TX), Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Joni Ernst (R-IA), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), John Hoeven (R-ND), John Kennedy (R-LA), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Jerry Moran (R-KS), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), James Risch (R-ID), Mitt Romney (R-UT), Mike Rounds (R-SD), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), John Thune (R-SD), Thom Tillis (R-NC), Roger Wicker (R-MS), and Todd Young (R-IN).
Despite the bill passing in the Senate, reports indicate that House Speaker Mike Johnson’s opposition to the legislation will effectively kill it. The American Tribune recently reported on Speaker Johnson’s comments, which indicated he did not intend to bring the bill to a vote on the House floor.
When asked if he saw a possibility for the bill to be voted on, Johnson responded, “I certainly don’t right now. We’re dealing with the appropriations process. We have immediate deadlines upon us in that. That’s where the attention of the House is in this moment.”
The speaker sounded off on the Senate for the bill’s focus on international interests, instead of the critical domestic issues that many American voters and taxpayers are more concerned about. Johnson particularly zeroed in on the border crisis.
“House Republicans were crystal clear from the very beginning of discussions that any so-called national security supplemental legislation must recognize that national security begins at our own border. The House acted ten months ago to help enact transformative policy change by passing the Secure Our Border Act, and since then, including today, the Senate has failed to meet the moment,” he continued.
Johnson further outlined how the House will pick up the slack amid the Senate’s failure and “work on its own” to serve the interests of the American public. “The mandate of national security supplemental legislation was to secure America’s own border before sending additional foreign aid around the world. It is what the American people demand and deserve. Now, in the absence of having received a single border policy change from the Senate, the House will have to continue to work its own will on these important matters. America deserves better than the Senate’s status quo,” the speaker continued.
