Multi-billionaire Elon Musk recently sparked a passionate a debate on X after he called out the “legacy media” asserting that “they lie about everything.” Musk, who has recently become a vocal critic of the mainstream media, unleashed a firestorm of anti-legacy media sentiment from users on his platform, where many shared his opinion.
The multi-company CEO recently shared a post claiming that the media doesn’t just lie in areas where it is apparent, but that it lies about everything. “Very common mistake to believe that the legacy media only lies about areas that you understand well. No, they lie about everything. What are the odds that they’d only lie about stuff you specifically know about?” Musk wrote.
Musk received a slew of responses from conservatives in the comments section expressing agreement with his argument. The popular X account Autism Capital suggested a phenomenon known as the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect could be responsible for the impact that the mainstream media on the perception of the masses.
“The Gell-Mann Amnesia effect: You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. You read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story, and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about Palestine than the baloney you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know.” the account wrote.
Another user suggested that the media deceptively includes bit and pieces of the truth, deceptively coordinated to push an agenda they have. “They don’t lie about EVERYTHING. They lie about what is relevant for their agenda. It’s lies sprinkled in between some truth. & this is what makes them dangerous!” they commented.
Another person expressed agreement with Musk, stating, “Absolutely. I have always taken the lies that I personally know are lies, based on personal knowledge, to lead me to ask friends, experts in other areas, about what they see. Once I recognize a pattern of lying, especially if there is an underlying unity of purpose, I can generalize cautiously. The unities I see are greed, power addition, fear of getting caught, and deep character pathology.”
Others noted, deception from the mainstream media is nothing new, explaining it has been years in the making. “They’ve been lying for as long as I can remember. Early YouTube had tons of videos regarding blatant lies made by the media. I remember a good one where CNN had 2 correspondents in the same parking lot pretending to be on separate ends of the nation. You could see the traffic drive by one camera and into the other in real time,” they wrote.
The American Tribune reported on other media criticism from Musk, who sounded off on MSNBC in the days leading up to the election over its smear of President-elect Donald Trump’s rally. . “Wow, MSNBC is utter scum of the Earth,” Musk wrote.
