Recently, liberal country music singer Maren Morris indicated that she is abandoning the genre because of the impact Donald Trump has had on its atmosphere. Morris complained that the “Trump years” have changed country music, which has traditionally appealed to conservative crowds, for the worse.
Morris recently sat down with the Los Angeles Times, alleging that “people’s biases” were brought out during former President Donald Trump’s time in the White House. She also suggested that several supposed phobias, often hurled at conservatives by the left, were being embraced by the country music community.
“After the Trump years, people’s biases were on full display,” Morris said during the interview. “It just revealed who people really were and that they were proud to be misogynistic and racist and homophobic and transphobic. All these things were being celebrated, and it was weirdly dovetailing with this hyper-masculine branch of country music. I call it butt rock.”
Morris also took aim at outspoken conservative country stars, such as Jason Aldean, who previously released the hit song “Try That in A Small Town.” She claimed that people are politically motivated to stream the songs instead of listening to them for the enjoyment of the music.
“People are streaming these songs out of spite,” Morris said, talking about conservative-themed country music. “It’s not out of true joy or love of the music. It’s to own the libs. And that’s so not what music is intended for. Music is supposed to be the voice of the oppressed — the actual oppressed. And now it’s being used as this really toxic weapon in culture wars.”
Over the past several years, Morris has aggressively inserted herself into the culture war, propagating woke viewpoints to country music fans. The musician has particularly honed in on the debate about exposing children to drag shows.
The American Tribune reported on recent comments from Morris, who asserted that drag shows are “completely harmless” and defended taking her toddler to such events. “We were doing a benefit at Bridgestone last year when they were doing the drag ban in Tennessee,” she said. “There were drag queens like throughout, entertaining as well, and one actually danced with me when I was singing my song, ‘The Middle.’ And it was just amazing and fun.”
Morris reportedly told the crowd at the drag queen event, “I brought my son here earlier today for soundcheck, and he’s turning three this week, and we got to go in the room where all the queens were getting ready and doing their makeup. And he freaked out when he went in there, because it’s just magic what drag queens do.”
Following the passage of a Tennessee law that banned drag shows close to schools, Morris encouraged the state to arrest her. She profanely stated, “There’s wigs everywhere, and the smell of hairspray and wig glue; there’s glitter; everyone’s in a good mood. It’s just like a room of love. . . . And yes, I introduced my son to some drag queens today, so Tennessee, f—ing arrest me.”
