“The View” co-host Sunny Hostin, though one of the most politically progressive hosts on the show, is also somewhat opposed to abortion due to her Catholic beliefs. Though she says she doesn’t support restricting access to abortion, such as by repealing Roe v. Wade, she said she is personally opposed to abortion. Even that little bit of anti-abortion sentiment was enough to land her in hot water with the viewers of “The View.”
In fact, they got angry enough about the matter to write in with hate mail against Hostin, just for saying that she is personally opposed to abortion, even after she tried to limit that by saying she doesn’t even support repealing Roe v. Wade.
Describing that hate mail and her views on the abortion topic during a recent episode, Hostin said, “The Republican Party in many respects is leaning on evangelicals for this argument. I myself am Catholic. I have mentioned many times I’m pro-life. I’ve received a lot of hate mail for it. That’s my personal position, but there has to be a separation between the government and religion.”
She did not, however, go on to elaborate with what sort of “hate mail” she has received related to her personal stance on abortion and whether any of it included threats, or if it was more mild mail with people just expressing their contrary opinions.
Hostin, describing her views on abortion in 2022, when Roe v. Wade was repealed, said, “The court is basically saying it’s time to welcome all this new life yet we can shoot them with our newly available, completely unrestricted guns. That conflict, it was sort of shocking to me. It’s unbelievable that precedent doesn’t seem to matter anymore.”
Then, when asked “Even incest?,” by Sarah Haines, Hostin answered, “No, I don’t. I don’t.” Continuing, she said, “That’s considered very radical for many people, and it’s because I’m Catholic and that’s my faith. And, you know, the justices — there are six Catholics on the bench, and there will be two Protestants because the newest justice, Ketanji Brown Jackson, is Protestant and there will be one person of Jewish faith. And so this has always been a very difficult discussion for me, but what is not difficult for me is the fact that this is an activist Supreme Court and they should not be deciding the law based on their faith. And even though I agree with Alito on the sanctity of life…but the fact that he clearly is using his religion and wielding it is pretty terrible.”
Watch her here:
That hasn’t led to Hostin supporting the GOP, however. In November of 2022, she compared women voting for the GOP to “roaches voting for raid,” saying, “What’s also surprising to me is the abortion issue. I read a poll just yesterday that white, Republican, suburban women are now going to vote Republican. It’s almost like roaches voting for Raid. Right? They’re voting against — they’re voting against their own self-interests! Do they want to live in Gilead? Do they want to be in the ‘Handmaid’s Tale’?”
Continuing, Hostin again explained that she is against abortion but doesn’t think the government should be able to prohibit it, saying, “The fact that women are voting against their own health care,” Hostin continued, adding, “I am very surprised that white Republican suburban women are voting against their own health care. I have not very recently evolved on the issue. I am Catholic, that is my faith, I believe that abortion is wrong. . . . For me. There’s a separation between state — a government — and church. And I do not have the right to tell someone else. However, they are voting against their own self-interest.”
