Harrison Butker, kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs, recently spoke with EWTN in an interview and, during that interview, took a strongly pro-life stand and insisted that abortion makes the unborn “the greatest victims of our society.” His remarks came when he recalled making a pro-life statement with his apparel when he visited the White House with the team last year to celebrate a Super Bowl win.
As background, when Butker and the Chiefs traveled to the Biden White House, known for its strong support of abortion, he wore a tie with the slogan “Vulnerari Praesidio” on it. That is a Latin phrase that translates to “Protect the most vulnerable.” Further, on the tie, Butker wore a pin that was the shape of an infant’s tiny feet. Both were intended to show his support for pro-life policies.
Speaking to EWTN about doing that and why he felt the need to stand up for the unborn while in the Biden White House, Butker said that he felt called to use his appearance in a public, political space to take a stand for and make a message on behalf of, the unborn.
Commenting on why he felt particularly called to defend the unborn, he described them as society’s greatest victims and said that they are entirely vulnerable, saying, “The unborn, to me, are the greatest victims of our society.” He continued, “They don’t have a voice. They don’t necessarily look like humans. They’re not very big. They can’t fight for themselves. There’s not a lot of people that are fighting for them.”
He then added that he sees the current state of abortion in America as being a “great atrocity” and framed it as “massacring the unborn.” He said, “And I just think it’s a great atrocity that’s occurring in this country with massacring the unborn. I felt like there’s no better place to send this message than to the masses and to represent the unborn at a place like the White House where, unfortunately, their voice is not heard.”
Butker also, when speaking to EWTN, called on young men to be leaders and follow God’s call. He said, “It’s something that we struggle with, I think, a lot of times to go outside of our comfort zone and to say, ‘You know what? God has called me to be a leader, and to lead by example. I’m going to lead my household and I’m going to lead outside the world when I’m evangelizing.’ So that’s something that I’m very passionate about.”
He emphasized that Christians have a particularly strong responsibility when it comes to being leaders and outspoken disciples of and advocates for their faith in Christ, building on his leadership remarks by saying, “I think Our Lord needs to be king. He needs to be front and center. And as Catholics, we have to be unapologetically proud of our faith and of Jesus Christ.”
