On Sunday night, the Academy Awards flopped with its fourth-lowest viewership ratings in the history of the awards ceremony’s broadcast. The Oscars only managed to attract 19.5 million viewers, a significant decline from the historical ratings of the telecast.
However, the mainstream media has been filled with euphemistic headlines, failing to acknowledge the reality of the ratings. While the ratings may be slightly better than previous lows in recent years, they still do not match the performance throughout past decades. “Oscars 2024 Hit 4-Year Viewership High With 19.5 Million,” one headline read. Another said, “TV Ratings: Oscars Score Post-Pandemic Highs.”
According to historical ratings of the Oscars, the 2014 television broadcast garnered almost 44 million viewers. Even just five years ago, the 2019 Oscars drew nearly 10 million more viewers than this year, when 30 million watched the ceremony.
While the media tries to spin this year’s ratings in some sort of positive manner, it can’t be avoided that viewership has nearly been cut in half over the past decade. Reports indicate that one of the main drivers of this decline could be a growing disinterest from the key demographic range of 18-49.
Furthermore, social media users have voiced their disdain for the Academy Awards, calling out the ceremony for its woke politics and seeming disconnect from the lives of average Americans. Some commenters expressed that they had no interest in being lectured by wealthy leftists for several hours. “I’d prefer not to drive half an hour to a theatre just for self righteous multi millionaires to lecture me on SJW topics for 3 hours when I thought I was seeing an entertaining movie,” one person commented on X.
“They never cared about normal people. They ONLY care about rich, popular, important people like themselves. Movies can collapse, they still are, and get, rich,” another user added, echoing a similar sentiment.
Others cited the fact that Jimmy Kimmel was hosting the broadcast this year, lamenting the incessantly liberal jokes that he delivers to the audience. “First of all, Kimmel is terrible. The only people who like his woke jokes are just like him. Another words, there aren’t too many people that like his show manship . He is terrible,” he said.
Moreover, many have offered anecdotes that they are simply out of touch with contemporary Hollywood, given the woke agenda the film industry constantly pushes. “If I hadn’t just read a post a few posts back saying that RDJr had won for Oppenheimer. I wouldn’t be able to name a single movie or actor that was in any of them. They made themselves so pushy and relentless that they drove us away,” another user wrote, illustrating their lack of awareness surrounding new films.
Former President Donald Trump also weighed in on this years broadcast of the Oscars, where he slammed Jimmy Kimmel as being the worst host the ceremony has had. “Has there EVER been a WORSE HOST than Jimmy Kimmel at The Oscars. His opening was that of a less than average person trying too hard to be something which he is not, and never can be. Get rid of Kimmel and perhaps replace him with another washed up, but cheap, ABC “talent,” George Slopanopoulos. He would make everybody on stage look bigger, stronger, and more glamorous,” Trump said.
