The House recently voted on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, a bill meant to clarify the legal status of babies born alive despite an abortion attempt, making it clear that they are infants and must be treated as such. That would mean that “post-birth abortions,” the new euphemism from the abortion lobby for killing babies, would be illegal.
Specifically, the bill provides that an infant born alive after surviving an abortion attempt is a “legal person for all purposes under the laws of the United States” and that doctors must care for those infants in the same manner that a “reasonably diligent and conscientious health care practitioner would render to any other child born alive.”
Fortunately for infants, the House Republicans rallied behind the bill and passed it on a nearly party-line vote, with the bill passing 220-210. All 210 of the “no” votes came from Democrats. The only Democrat that voted “yes” was Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas. One other Democrat, also from Texas, voted “present.”
Catholic clergy around the nation sounded off on Democrats for refusing to support the bill. Michael Burbidge, the Bishop of the Diocese of Arlington, TX, for example, said “We commend the House of Representatives for passing legislation to protect innocent children from infanticide, and urge the Senate to follow suit.”
Adding to that, Burbidge also said “Babies who are born alive during the process of an abortion deserve compassionate care and medical attention – just the same as any other newborn baby.”
Joining Bishop Burbidge in sounding off on Democrats not voting to protect the lives of delivered babies was Bishop Joseph Strickland of the Diocese of Tyler. He, speaking on the matter in no uncertain terms, said:
“The moral corruption on display here is devastating for this nation. How can we hope for peace when elected officials have such a blatant disregard for the sanctity of life? To be silent in the face of this evil is to be complicit with this evil. We must say NO!”
And it wasn’t just Bishops in the Southeast that were shocked and infuriated by how Democrats voted on the bill. Bishop Thomas Tobin of the Diocese of Providence in Rhode Island joined Bishop Burbidge and Bishop Strickland, saying:
“To members of Congress who voted against the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act — you just voted against giving basic medical care to a struggling newborn child. How heartless, barbaric and cruel. Shame on you.”
Further, it wasn’t just Bishops that were outraged by the way Democrats voted on the bill. Other pro-life groups and individuals called out what they saw as an “evil” vote as well. For example, Eric Scheidler, executive director of Pro-Life Action League, told Fox News Digital in a statement that:
“Yesterday’s vote chillingly reveals how deep in the tank the Congressional Democrats are for Planned Parenthood and Big Abortion. They aren’t even willing to provide help to a tiny baby who survives a failed abortion, because that shows too clearly how every single abortion violently ends the life of an innocent human being.”
Continuing, he then said, “These abortion survivors have to be sacrificed to protect the right to kill unborn babies.”
