James Corden found himself to be the butt of the joke when he blatantly copied a Ricky Gervais joke nearly word-for-word.
Corden took some time to talk about Elon Musk and to poke fun at the eccentrics billionaire’s new plans for Twitter, which he recently acquired.
Talking on his own show The Late Night Show, Corden took aim at Musk’s new plan to charge popular Twitter users 20$ for premium services on the platform.

“When you see Elon Muck talk about Twitter he does this thing where he goes, ‘Well, it’s the town square,’” began Corden.
“But it isn’t,” he continued. “Because if someone puts up a poster in a town square that says ‘guitar lesson available, you don’t get people in the town going ‘I don’t want to play the guitar! I want to play the piano, you piece of sh*t!’”.
“That sign wasn’t for you, it was for someone else. You don’t have to get mad!”
This joke seemed to hit home as the audience erupted into laughter, and admittedly, it was a pretty clever jab.
Unfortunately, Corden was not the first person to use this joke and the internet quickly outed his plagiarism.
In a 2018 stand-up comedy show called Humanity, an eerily similar joke was made by Gervais.
“It’s like going into a town square and there’s a notice for guitar lessons and you go ‘but I don’t f**king want guitar lessons!’ said Gervais in 2018.
Ricky Gervais even called out Corden on Twitter yesterday, in a post that has since been deleted by the comedian who feels “sorry for him,” referencing the backlash that James Corden has received.
“The bit about the town square advert for guitar lessons is brilliant,” Gervais Tweeted.
One user chided Corden, saying he “could’ve at least credited Ricky Gervais when using his jokes.”
Now, Gervais is offering what he thinks is the explanation for the joke theft that viewers witnessed yesterday.
When asked if Corden asked for permission to use the joke, Gervais said this.
“No. I reckon one of the writers ‘came up with it’ for him. I doubt he would knowingly just copy such a famous stand up routine word for word like that,” explained Gervais.
Other Twitter users had similar ideas, with one saying, “I think one of your writers stitched you right up. Good work!”
All of these jokes at the expense of James Corden came following backlash after the UK comedian was banned from the famous Balthazar restaurant in New York City for being disrespectful to waitstaff.
That ban has since been lifted but a sour taste has been left in many fans’ mouths.
Now to close, I will leave you with this joke that Gervais made about Corden at the 2020 Golden Globes.
“The world got to see James Corden as a fat p*ssy. He was also in the movie Cats. But no one saw that. And the reviews – shocking. I saw one that said this is the worst thing to happen to cats since dogs.”
