Gov. Abbott isn’t backing down in his battle with Biden and the United States Supreme Court. Instead of going along with allowing federal officials to cut the razor wire the Texas National Guard has placed in popular border crossing spots like Shelby Park in Eagle Pass, TX, the Texas National Guard is continuing to erect the razor wire barriers.
The defiance came after a 5-4 ruling from the Supreme Court, in which Justice Amy Coney Barret and Chief Justice John Roberts sided with the liberal justices to grant the Biden Administration’s request and allow it to cut the razor wire Texas erected to defend its border.
After the ruling, Gov. Abbott and the Texas Military Department vowed defiance. For example, the Texas Military Department announced, “The Texas Military Department continues to hold the line in Shelby Park to deter and prevent unlawful entry into the State of Texas. We remain resolute in our actions to secure our border, preserve the rule of law, and protect the sovereignty of our State.”
Gov. Abbott, for his part, both released a lengthy statement in which he explained why Texas has a right to defend its borders and posted about the Texas National Guard’s strong adherence to duty. In that post, he said, “I am so grateful for the Texas National Guard, and all of the other members of the Texas military department, and the Texas Department of Public Safety, who are stepping up to secure the border in the absence of Joe Biden enforcing the immigration laws of America.”
Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Chris Olivarez spoke out about the situation as well. He, in a statement posted to X, wrote, “The State of Texas, under Gov. @GregAbbott_TX’s Operation Lone Star, will maintain its current posture in deterring illegal border crossings by utilizing effective border security measures – reinforced concertina wire & anti-climb barriers along the Rio Grande. The logical concern should be why the Federal Government continues to hinder Texas’ ability to protect its border, all while allowing for the exploitation, dangerous, & inhumane methods of permitting illegal immigrants, including children, to illegally cross a dangerous river where many have lost their lives. Texas is the only state using every strategy & resource to protect its sovereignty, combat criminal activity, & discourage illegal immigration. #Texas will continue to hold the line.”
And it wasn’t just talk coming from Governor Abbott and the Texas National Guard, as videos emerged showing the continued construction of razor wire border barriers after the SCOTUS ruling. For example, CBS News reporter Camilo Montoya-Galvez posted a video that showed yet more bundles of razor wire being deployed in the border crossing area.
Captioning the video, he wrote, “Texas National Guard soldiers are setting up more razor wire here in Eagle Pass to repel illegal crossings. Yesterday, the Supreme Court allowed the Biden administration to remove this wire but Texas is still blocking Border Patrol from processing migrants in this area.” Watch that here:
Similarly, Jorge Ventura posted another video of the Texas troopers deploying concertina wire along the border. He captioned it, “NEW: Texas Military doubling down by installing more razor wire and anti-climb fencing in Shelby Park. This coming after SCOTUS ruling that allows border patrol agents to cut through the razor wire. Texas officials have seized control of Shelby Park – we have not seen BP agents try to come in and cut the wire.” Watch that video here:
