A Texas man learned the hard way that you don’t ignore legal police orders and attempt to tase them in the process, as Breitbart reported this past weekend. After escalating the situation, the man was shot in the chest.
The confrontation began at a restaurant in San Antonio, Texas shortly before midnight on Saturday. He was one of what Breitbart called “part of a disturbance” that necessitated police intervention and was asked to vacate the premises by the policeman, an off-duty officer working security that night.
As the man was being led to the parking lot by the police officer, he apparently got agitated by what was happening and attempted to snatch the officer’s taser from his belt. It seems he successfully confiscated it. My San Antonio covered the story with information from the police department:
According to the SAPD, an off-duty 29-year-old police officer from Somerset was working security at Twin Peaks Saturday night before a disturbance at the restaurant forced the officer to remove a man and his friends from the venue for being too intoxicated and belligerent. According to officials, the man got angry with the off-duty officer while being moved to the parking lot. The man took the officer’s taser before sprinting away. And after a short pursuit, pointed the taser at the officer before tasing him with it. The off-duty officer was then able to grab his own gun on hand and return fire, striking the man in the chest.
The shooting victim, a 34-year-old man, is now reportedly in critical condition at a local hospital. The police officer was also taken to the hospital as a precaution, perhaps related to a taser discharge or the physicality of the interaction leading up to the shooting.
Twitter offered a few more sources of news for the shooting, including the previously-cited My San Antonio report.

No decent person would wish this man further harm, and it should go without saying we all hope he enjoys a speedy recovery.
That being said, it should never have come to this. For starters, the old adage that nothing good happens after midnight certainly seems apropos of the predicament the patron-turned-shooting victim experienced. A San Antonio bar with hired security personnel should be the first clue that things can quickly go south.
No doubt, alcohol played a crucial role in the night’s tragic outcome. Though little else has been reported so far, it seems safe to suggest that Breitbart was probably being kind with its description as a “disturbance.” Bar fight seems more appropriate.
Combine the late weekend hours with booze, bar-room disturbances, and police intervention, and you’d be lucky to come out of the weekend without an injury of some sort – be it from a fisticuffs or in this case a gunshot wound from an officer defending his own life.
