What should a member of a high school team do if benched by the coach during a game? Most would probably get a bit angry, but then focus on being better in the future to avoid the humiliation of being pulled off the field or court in the future. That’s not what happened during a recent basketball game in Texas, however, as a player’s benching during a game turned into an assault.
That incident occurred at a game in the Willis Independent School District, with a coach for the district allegedly being attacked after he got back to school from a game, with the benched basketball player and his bother allegedly beating up the coach over the player’s benching. The player had been benched for inappropriate conduct toward an opponent during a game.
The player involved was Jevin Allen. 17 years old, he allegedly committed the assault alongside his 22 year old brother, Jarrick Allen. Both jevin and Jarrick Allen were charged with assault on a public servant over the horrifying attack on the coach.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office described the attack in a press release. Beginning and giving some background to what happened, the sheriff’s office said, “On December 5, 2023, at about 9:52 p.m., the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Willis High School in reference to an assault that had occurred in the parking lot at the school. According to the victim, who is a coach for Willis I.S.D., he was assaulted by several individuals, including a student identified as Jevin Allen (17 years of age), when they returned to the school after the Willis and Conroe game. According to the coach, Jevin was benched at the game due to his behavior toward an opposing team player, which infuriated Jevin and his family.”
Continuing, the sheriff’s office described the attack and how the two brothers allegedly ambushed the coach, saying, “Upon returning to Willis High School, Jevin and his family were waiting in the parking lot. The coach went into the school, and when he went out into the parking lot, Jevin and his family were still there. As they approached the victim, they began a verbal confrontation, which led to Jevin punching the victim in the face. At that same time, Jevin’s brother, Jarrick Allen (22 years of age), also began assaulting the coach.”
Fortunately, there were bystanders there to try to break up the fight before it escalated to something more brutal: “Another coach witnessed the assault and attempted to break it up along with several unidentified bystanders. Once the fight broke up, both suspects fled the scene.“
Commenting on how its deputies determined the likely guilt of the two brothers, the sheriff’s office then added, “During the investigation, deputies reviewed video surveillance and interviewed witnesses, corroborating the victim’s facts. Deputies also noted the victim had injuries to his head, neck, face, and arms as a result of the assault.“
Concluding, the office then noted on what conditions the brothers are being held, saying, “Deputies located both suspects and placed them under arrest for assault on a public servant, and transported them to the Montgomery County Jail. Jevin and Jarrick have since been released from the Montgomery County Jail after posting a $23,000 bond each.”
The school district, commenting on the matter, said, “The investigation is ongoing, but we did determine that the student’s address was no longer valid, so he has been withdrawn from the district. We are deeply saddened by this incident and will not tolerate this behavior from students.”
