Taylor Swift has officially been named Time’s Person of the Year for 2023. After a year in which she broke numerous records in the music industry and even found herself as the center of attention at multiple NFL games, Taylor has now been honored with the iconic award that has immortalized so many other stars and their accomplishments.
Taylor Swift’s 2023 was a year unlike that of any other artist in recent memory. Starting with the Eras Tour, which brought wave after wave of rabid Taylor Swift fans to countless markets in America and abroad, Taylor made a huge impact on the economy as a whole in the United States of America. Her tour left a wake of tourism in the cities that she visited, something never seen to the extent that she reached.
Then, later this year, Swift began a romantic relationship with Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce in what has been the biggest news in celebrity dating in 2023. Fans of the singer were all over the news, reading tabloids and rumors about the pair’s budding love. NFL fans, on the other hand, were subject to countless cut-aways during Chiefs’ games as the broadcast crews insisted on showing Swift in the stands.
Taylor Swift sat down with Time to discuss the award, and she offered some rare insight into her life. She started by explaining that this year has been the best she’s ever felt. Swift said, “This is the proudest and happiest I’ve ever felt, and the most creatively fulfilled and free I’ve ever been.”
Taylor then talked about the struggles that she has had throughout her career with what she considered to be cancellation attempts and how, with age, she has learned to ignore the mob when it comes to her and simply enjoy her life.
She said, “Over the years, I’ve learned I don’t have the time or bandwidth to get pressed about things that don’t matter. Yes, if I go out to dinner, there’s going to be a whole chaotic situation outside the restaurant. But I still want to go to dinner with my friends. … Life is short. Have adventures. Me locking myself away in my house for a lot of years — I’ll never get that time back. I’m more trusting now than I was six years ago.”
She added another really important sentence about dealing with cancellation attempts in today’s America. As Swift explains, while it may feel like the end of the world when the cancellation mob comes for you, just keep moving, and all will be well. She said, “I thought that moment of backlash was going to define me negatively for the rest of my life.”
Clearly, now that she has been named the Time Person of the Year for 2023 and has been the center of pop culture for nearly 12 months, Taylor has given a blueprint for stars who do not want to cower to the mainstream media’s demands. Swift has changed the game for musicians and performers, and that effect will likely be seen for years to come.
