The NFL season is over, and Taylor Swift and the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers, drawing the most eyeballs in the history of the big game. Much of it is the Swift effect, with the iconic pop songstress adding her legions of fans to the already absurd number of people that tune in to the Super Bowl. Her influence goes far beyond curious females hoping for a glimpse of their idol, however.
Since announcing that she is dating Travis Kelce, the Kelce brother’s podcast, “New Heights With Jason and Travis Kelce,” has consistently ranked at or near the top of the podcast charts, and recent rumors suggest the brothers could command upwards of a $100 million deal for their show. Considering brother Jason retired this week, it would be a nice landing spot for the future Hall of Famer.
The ERAS tour has been one of the most lucrative in music history, and Swift’s concert film dwarfed Beyonce’s movie, which was released almost simultaneously. Taylor Swift also has a new album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” set to drop this Spring, and it is expected to be the biggest-selling album of all time. In an “era” where few people buy physical music, the achievement is even more impressive.
Unfortunately, Taylor Swift also occasionally dabbles in politics. While the “Blank Space” singer has managed not to go super-far-left, she has been critical of conservatives and conservative causes, and the last thing the GOP needs is a full-blown Taylor Swift assault at the polls in November.
By all appearances, Swift blows in whatever direction the wind is blowing politically. In 2018, the Tennessee native criticized the Republican candidate and announced she was voting for Democrat Phil Bredesen. The Democrat lost, but Swift also didn’t have the cache of fans in 2018 that she boasts in 2024.
Swift has also been throwing her support behind the lgbtq agenda, criticizing then-President Donald Trump in 2019, despite Trump being the only president in American history to support gay marriage when he took office. In 2020, she also weighed in on the death of George Floyd, saying: “Racial injustice has been ingrained deeply into local and state governments, and changes MUST be made there. In order for policies to change, we need to elect people who will fight against police brutality and racism of any kind.”
The point is Swift may not bother actually to do research; otherwise, she would know the facts about supposed police brutality and racial injustices, especially where George Floyd is concerned. She wrote on social media about Super Tuesday: “I wanted to remind you guys to vote the people who most represent YOU into power.”
She continued, “If you haven’t already, make a plan to vote today.” According to CBS News, “In September 2023, after Swift urged people to vote on social media, Vote.org averaged 13,000 users every half hour. That is some serious sway, and the GOP certainly doesn’t need Swift pointing her legions of likely apolitical fans to the ballot box.
At some point, one would assume Taylor Swift fatigue would set into the public zeitgeist, and people would move on. So far, it hasn’t happened, and the timing might not be ideal for the GOP, considering the General Election is only months away. Let’s hope she sticks to touring and stays out of politics for a while.
