Speaking during a rally in Georgia on the eve of the November 5, 2024 election, United States Senator from Ohio and 2024 Trump running mate JD Vance sounded off on Vice President Kamala Harris, calling her “trash” in a rebuke of Biden’s “garbage” comment. The crowd went wild with glee over his remarks.
As background, the spat started with comedian and “Kill Tony” podcast Tony Hinchcliffe, who spoke at the October 27 Madison Square Garden rally. He said, “I don’t know if you guys know this. But there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now.” He added, “Yeah — I think it’s called Puerto Rico.”
Then, on a campaign call after Hinchcliffe’s remarks, President Biden said, “And just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage.” Well, let me tell you something. I don’t– I– I don’t know the Puerto Rican that– that I know– or a Puerto Rico, where I’m from– in my home state of Delaware, they’re good, decent, honorable people. The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters– his– his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American. It’s totally contrary to everything we’ve done, everything we’ve been.”
Vance, speaking in Atlanta on November 4, commented on the garbage remark from Biden and used it to roast Vice President Kamala Harris, who has said, when asked, that she disagreed with Biden’s characterization of Trump supporters as being “garbage.”
Sen. Vance said, beginning his takedown, “Our message to Kamala Harris is very simple. The citizens of this country, they are not garbage for thinking you’re doing a bad job. The citizens of this country are not racist for thinking you ought to close down that damn southern border.”
Continuing, he said that it was time to “take out the trash” and that the trash was Kamala. He said, “The citizens of this country are not garbage for wanting to be able to afford groceries and a nice place to live. But in two days, we are gonna take out the trash in Washington, D.C. And the trash’s name is Kamala Harris.”
The members of the crowd in Atlanta loved his remarks about Harris and his characterization of her as “trash,” cheering and roaring with applause wildly as he hammered her for Biden’s rhetoric and the state of things in America. Watch him here:
Biden, trying to reverse course somewhat after being hammered for his characterization of Trump’s supporters as “garbage,” said, “Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage—which is the only word I can think of to describe it. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don’t reflect who we are as a nation.”
Sen. Vance, posting on X (formerly Twitter) about the election on November 5th, again called on voters to throw out Biden and Harris, saying, “We’re hearing a lot about long lines and high enthusiasm. Get in line, stay in line, and VOTE. Today is the day we take back our country.”
