The “Swifties for Trump” movement has grown in popularity as the 2024 election fast approaches. While Taylor Swift has largely been silent this election cycle, despite her past Democratic endorsements, the pop star’s fans have become increasingly divided. While many Swifties are die-hard Kamala Harris supporters, some have gone the other direction, voicing their affinity for former President Donald Trump.
Many of Swift’s left-leaning fan base have grown concerned about their idol’s seeming abstinence from politics this year and, as a result, have taken matters into their own hands, creating a “Swifties for Kamala” movement, amassing a following on Instagram of roughly 50,000. The idea started when one Swiftie came up with the idea on social media, writing, “U.S. swifties should mass organize and help campaign for Kamala Harris” so they can have a plan “to move and push blue votes.”
After the movement started gaining steam, an official Zoom call was hosted, featuring praise from Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). “I want to start with you, and that is what I love best about Swifties. You are resilient, and you know how to take on bullies, and you know how to be your most authentic, most joyful selves. And you overcome pretty much anything that life throws at you. And that’s what the Kamala Harris campaign is all about,” she said.
However, while liberal Swifties are mobilizing, there has been a simultaneous conservative reaction among her conservative fans, who have organized “Swifties for Trump.” Predictably, the radical leftist portion of Taylor Swift fans have not taken kindly to this countermovement. Jenna Piwowarczyk, a college student who has gone viral for wearing a “Swifties for Trump” t-shirt recently spoke about the backlash.
“I got literally thousands of comments telling me Taylor would hate me, telling me I’m a betrayer, I’m a traitor,” Piwowarczyk told The New York Post. “But I also got some backlash from conservatives as well. Because they know Taylor Swift is liberal and a lot of them don’t like the message that she gives to young girls.”
The conservative Swiftie addressed Trump’s recent post about “Swifties for Trump” that she was included in, which helped spark interest in the movement. “He posted two pictures of me wearing my Swifties for Trump shirt,” she said. “My picture was blowing up and this movement started becoming a thing two weeks ago.” Subsequently, Piwowarczyk has become the face of pro-Trump Taylor Swift fans.
She continued, explaining how the movement has inspired some fans to consider becoming Republican. “People come up to me . . . people are calling me, DMing me, telling me, ‘Listen, I love Taylor Swift. I was scared to admit that I might be interested in Republicanism, but you’ve encouraged me to dig deeper into that and I’m going to be voting for Trump.”
Speaking about her detractors, Piwowarczyk claimed, “Honestly, they aren’t very creative. Most just tell us that Taylor would hate us or that we shouldn’t be able to call ourselves Swifties if we support Trump. We’re also accused of being bots or buying followers. I assure you neither are true.”
