A New Mexico grandma babysitting her grandbaby acted quickly to protect the child when an alleged burglar broke into the house during what was supposed to be a fun and relaxing movie night, shooting him when he refused to leave the property. The alleged burglar was a runaway criminal with a lengthy rap sheet named Joseph Rivera.
According to the grandma, Anissa Tinnin, she and her 4-year-old granddaughter were having a fun night together, singing and dancing along while watching the Taylor Swift Eras Tour film. She said that they had dinner, took baths, and then headed to the couch to watch the movie. But that’s when a, as she put it, “longtime felon” broke into the house and threatened them.
Acting quickly, Tinnin begged him to leave and gave him what he wanted, which led him to temporarily exit the home. As soon as he did so, she got her granddaughter to a safe location and retrieved her firearm and, when he returned to the house after testing the keys, opened fire on him. She then, amazingly, tried to render aid to him as she waited for emergency services personnel to arrive.
Writing about the incident on Facebook, Tinnin said, “March 21, 2024 was typical Thursday day for me. However, this Thursday was extra special because my 4 year old granddaughter was going to spend the night with me. I was going to take her to school on Friday, while the rest of the family was at Tinnin Hunt Club preparing for a corporate event on Friday morning. We ate dinner, bathed and snuggled on the couch for her favorite movie, Taylor Swift Era’s. We had our popcorn and M&M’s dancing and singing along when our lives were about to suddenly change.”
Continuing, she described the terrifying break-in, saying, “A longtime convicted felon who was running from the police, broke into our home. For 2 minutes, I negotiated with him to give him what he wanted and begged for the life of mine and my granddaughter. He left with the several keys as well as fob’s to my car, but when they didn’t work, he returned.”
Explaining what she did when he first left and what happened when he returned, Tinnin wrote, “When I got him outside the first time, I knew I needed to get my granddaughter and dog to a safe location and get my firearm. I did just that. As I exited our bedroom to go down the hallway, he broke into the home again by busting in our locked front door and came at me. I yelled for him to stop but he didn’t. I shot him. I then rendered aid until police arrived.”
Tinnin then commented on the crime situation in Albuquerque, writing, “There’s so much to this story and will be more to come but I have received so many wonderful and loving calls and texts, I wanted to let everyone know we are safe and my family is working through this traumatic time. This city is a mess. Criminals are ruining innocent people’s lives everyday. I’m sick of keeping quiet about the disaster this city’s leadership has created. Please pray for our family as we navigate through this traumatic and emotional time.”
