Thalia Chaverria, a star soccer player at New Mexico State, was found unresponsive at her home on El Dorado Court in Las Cruces, NM, shortly after she celebrated her 20th birthday. Chaverria was a junior at the school at the time of her “sudden” death.
According to the Daily Mail, Dan Trujillo, a public information officer with the Las Cruces Police Department, said, “we have no reason to believe her death is suspicious, or the result of criminal activity or foul play.” Similarly, the City of Las Cruces said, “At this point, investigators have no reason to believe Chaverria’s death is suspicious or the result of criminal activity.” Despite that claim from the police that there was likely no foul play, an autopsy is currently pending.
NM State soccer coach Rob Baarts, in a press release about Chaverria’s passing, said, “The sudden loss of Thalia has completely rocked our Aggie soccer families’ world.” Continuing, Coach Baarts added, “T was an inspiration and rock to this team. She will be missed but not forgotten. Her spirit will be with us every day, on and off the pitch. I will always love you, T.”
NM State Athletic Director Mario Moccia also commented on Chaverria’s passing in the press release. “Yesterday, we lost an amazing young woman, and we are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of a member of our Aggie family. Thalia had a vibrant personality and those who were fortunate enough to spend time with her knew she had a bright future ahead of her,” Moccia began.
Continuing, Moccia said, “The New Mexico State community is very tight-knit, and this tragedy is felt throughout. Our most sincere thoughts and prayers go out to Thalia’s family and friends in this time of mourning.”
A GoFundMe was created to help pay for Chaverria’s funeral and transport her body back from New Mexico to California. Describing her family and talent as a soccer player, the GoFundMe said, “Thalia just turned 20 July 2nd. She was an amazing talented Soccer player for New Mexico State. She was a sister to her two brothers, a daughter and a loving dog mom to her fur babies. She was loved by many. Her long beautiful curly hair and smile will forever be embedded in our memories.”
Some of the generous people who donated left messages of support and condolence for the family. One, for example, said, “UNM Soccer team is praying for all of you. Such a heartbreaking loss and know the days, weeks, months ahead are not going to be easy. Know that there’s a whole community behind you.”
Another person who left a generous donation and a comment said, “There are no words to make this better! Just know Thalia was an amazing, beautiful, student and human being. Sending love, light, and prayers to her family during this difficult time.”
Still another added, “The family shouldn’t have to worry about the large cost of getting their daughter back to them.”
