Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office had went off the reservation with an unhinged response to Congressional investigators who are seeking transparency over his reported attempts to indict and arrest former President Donald J. Trump.
What did they say? “Stop calling us with this bullsh*t.” That is the response that Manhattan DA Bragg’s representatives gave to a House Judiciary staffer on Wednesday when he tried contacting the DA’s office by phone.
News on that comes from the New York Post, which reports that a Bragg staffer told the House Judiciary staffer, “Your committee has no jurisdiction over us. You’re wrong. Stop calling us with this bulls—t.”
Commenting on that response, the insider discussing it with the New York Post said, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen any government entity respond to Congress in that manner. It’s quite embarrassing, but I don’t think anyone is surprised based on how partisan that office has become.”
That response comes alongside a tit-for-tat letter and response battle between the House Republicans and DA Bragg’s staff.
That battle began on Monday, with a letter from members of the House GOP contingent to DA Bragg’s office. In the letter, they warned him that a politically motivated prosecution of a former president would constitute election interference, saying:
“You are reportedly about to engage in an unprecedented abuse of prosecutorial authority: the indictment of a former President of the United States and current declared candidate for that office,” the letter stated. “This indictment comes after years of your office searching for a basis—any basis—on which to bring charges, ultimately settling on a novel legal theory untested anywhere in the country and one that federal authorities declined to pursue. If these reports are accurate, your actions will erode confidence in the evenhanded application of justice and unalterably interfere in the course of the 2024 presidential election. In light of the serious consequences of your actions, we expect that you will testify about what plainly appears to be a politically motivated prosecutorial decision.”
Bragg’s general counsel, Leslie Dubeck, has refused to comply with the demands for information made in that letter, calling the probe “an unprecedented inquiry into a pending local prosecution.” Speaking on that, she said:
“The Letter’s requests are an unlawful incursion into New York’s sovereignty. Congress’s investigative jurisdiction is derived from and limited by its power to legislate concerning federal matters.”
She added that Bragg’s office was requesting “an opportunity to meet and confer with committee staff to better understand what information the DA’s Office can provide that relates to a legitimate legislative interest and can be shared consistent with the District Attorney’s constitutional obligations.”
Trump, for his part, has been taking to Truth Social to sound off on the issue. In a recent post, for example, he said:
IT IS THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY OF MANHATTAN WHO IS BREAKING THE LAW BY USING THE FAKE AND FULLY DISCREDITED TESTIMONY (EVEN BY THE SDNY!) OF A CONVICTED LIAR, FELON AND JAILBIRD, MICHAEL COHEN, TO INCREDIBLY PERSECUTE, PROSECUTE, AND INDICT A FORMER PRESIDENT, AND NOW LEADING (BY FAR!) PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, FOR A CRIME THAT DOESN’T EXIST. ALVIN BRAGG SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE CRIME OF “INTERFERENCE IN A PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.”
Trump also accused Bragg of taking a huge amount of money from George Soros, saying, “Just Out: District Attorney Alvin Bragg received in EXCESS OF ONE MILLION DOLLARS from Radical Left Enemy of “TRUMP,” George Soros. Bragg is also very close to the Clinton Campaign. Republicans and Conservatives are more UNITED than they have been in many years. Even Democrats don’t like what’s going on with the Manhattan D.A. This is a continuation of the greatest Witch Hunt of all time!“
