After taking the American box office by storm, “Sound of Freedom” went international, heading to theaters around the world and informing audiences who showed up about the depths of the depraved sex-trafficking industry. One such region to which it expanded was Latin America, the same region in which the plot takes place, and it is dominating the box office there in the same way that it exploded in the United States.
Angel Studios, which managed to buy and release the movie after Disney bought the IP rights to it when it absorbed 20th Century Fox but then never released the mostly completed movie, thus managed to score another major financial success, selling millions of tickets on the opening weekend in Latin America alone.
The studio announced its massive success in a press release, saying, “Angel Studios—a platform and studio empowering filmmakers to crowdfund, create, and distribute films and TV series globally, backed by thousands of Angel investors—has reached a new milestone, with the film SOUND OF FREEDOM claiming the #1 spot in 18 countries in Latin America. Written and directed by Alejandro Monteverde, the film has already reached its goal of selling 2 million tickets in Latin America to represent the 2 million children trafficked each year.”
The press release also quoted, Jared Geesey, Chief Distribution Officer at Angel Studios, as saying, “The domestic box office performance on SOUND OF FREEDOM has been an incredible success story, but some industry experts have argued our film would not be able to translate this success overseas. We’re grateful to our fans for proving them wrong, and making us the number one movie in Latin America. We’re seeing packed theaters, standing ovations, widespread enthusiasm, and strong word-of-mouth from Buenos Aires to Mexico City to Bogota to Caracas, Lima, and beyond.”
Continuing, Mr. Geesey noted that the Latin American market snapped up “Sound of Freedom” tickets faster than even the US market, saying, “We set a goal of reaching 2 million in advance ticket sales—which took a full week in the US—and reached that goal in just four days in Latin America. This film is fast-becoming a global movement for change.”
Mr. Geesey also announced a few days earlier, on September 1st, that the movie would expand to theaters in even more countries around the world this fall, saying, “We are thrilled to roll out another list of countries where SOUND OF FREEDOM is doing a theatrical run. This list spans several continents including Europe, South America, Africa, and Asia, and there is even more to come. We’re seeing surging demand for this film around the globe, and we will continue to make additional announcements in the coming days and weeks.”
At that time, the film was still doing well in the US despite being out for a month and a half, with the press release noting, “SOUND OF FREEDOM continues to break theatrical records as it continues to hold steady in the US box office six weeks after release. The film now ranks in the Top 10 Box Office Cume for the year. The film just wrapped its 7th weekend in theaters, and remains in over 2,100 theaters with a total box office cume of over $178,000,000.”
