Central Las Vegas turned into another note in the long list of examples of why owning and being prepared to use a firearm is a good thing, as the home of a 70-year-old man was the scene of a break-in by two masked bandits and the elderly man was only saved thanks to his son being on site, well-armed, and quick thinking.
That incident occurred on Wednesday, September 20th, at about 9 in the morning. It was then that two masked burglars tried to break into the rear door of a home in the Spring Valley area of Central Las Vegas. They were wearing the aforementioned masks, gloves, and dark clothing, and obviously up to no good when trying to break in through the back door, so the 50-yar-old son of the 70-year-old homeowner retrieved his firearm.
Then, before the masked men could finish invading the home and potentially injure or kill his father, that armed and faithful son opened fire on them, killing one and wounding the other. The intruder who was shot dead was found in the backyard, and the other individual jumped over a wall and fled in a grey sedan.
That fleeing suspect was soon caught, as it was within minutes that law enforcement authorities received reports of a gray sedan driving erratically. Homicide police Lt. Jason Johansson, speaking on that, said, “Shortly after that call came in, the same vehicle, which was a gray sedan, was involved in an accident where two other vehicles were struck in the area of Tropicana and Decatur (Boulevard),”
The driver of the gray sedan then was arrested by police and taken to the hospital to receive treatment for his gunshot wound. Police arrested him because he was attired as the homeowner described and had a gunshot wound to his leg, seemingly linking him to the break-in.
The 50-year-old son of the homeowner is, for now, in the legal clear, as the police officers are treating the incident as a clear case of self-defense. Commenting on that aspect of the case while describing the factors that indicate as much, Lt. Johansson said, “This shooting appears to be done in self-defense. Two people are in their home, two people wearing masks and dark clothing attempt to break into their house through a rear door.”
Continuing, Lt. Johansson added that the elderly homeowner and his loyal son had not been arrested and had cooperated fully with the law enforcement authorities. He went on to add that there will likely be no charges filed against them, saying, “I don’t anticipate there being any charges (against them) based on the details I have right now.”
Had the homeowner been alone and unarmed, the situation could have ended far differently. As it was, his son was able to stand in as a paladin and protect him from the home-invaders, using the tool that makes all men equal to ensure his father stayed out of harm’s way.
