A clip of President Joe Biden was shared on social media earlier this year, showing him skirt a barrage of questions hurled at him by the frenzied reporters. As Biden concluded his remarks, stating, “God protect our troops,” the press instantly began shouting questions at him, leaving the president visibly overwhelmed by the situation.
In the footage, the White House staffers could be heard escorting reporters out of the room as someone appeared to be directing Biden away as well. Users on social reacted to the incident, interpreting the situation as another example of Biden having little to no engagement with the press. Sharing a clip of the incident, conservative commentator Benny Johnson wrote, “WOW: Biden’s handlers remove him as he is attacked with questions from reporters he is too confused to answer.”
Others criticized that the Biden-Harris administration seemingly refused to engage with the press.”First President that never takes questions from reporters. First VP Harris, now Presidential candidate that doesn’t do debates. I don’t call ABC debate one at all. All the demands Harris put on what they can and can’t do. She probably got the questions ahead of time. Not normal!” one person wrote in the comments section.
However, some challenged the assertion presented by Johnson and others that Biden was confused, positing that the scene was simply chaotic. “You couldn’t hear any questions in that noise and he didn’t appear to be confused. You however are confused in that you don’t see what is going on here and thus made something up,” they wrote. Another person similarly said, “The press needs to get together with each other and have one question at a time.”
Another person juxtaposed Biden’s seeming refrain from engaging with the press to President-elect Donald Trump’s constant engagement with reporters, where he usually always answers questions following his remarks. “Biden rarely answers questions after his rare press conferences. Trump did press conferences frequently and always answered questions. He was the most transparent president probably in American history,” they wrote.
Others suggested it was time to invoke the 25th Amendment, claiming Biden was unfit to serve. “We are in a constitutional crisis. We have President unfit to serve. The remedies are the 25th which implicates the one person that could initiate it and an impeachment/removal by a compromised/neutered Congress. The forefathers were awesome. They didn’t anticipate this,” one person commented.
However, someone else opined that invoking the 25th would backfire as it would put Kamala Harris in charge of the presidency at least until the election. “I would say enact the 25th but then we would be left with a communist for 5 months. Not sure if that is a good idea,” one person said, lamenting the idea of Vice President Harris running the country.
