In another terrible tragedy to strike America’s police forces, a sergeant in the Sheridan Police Department, Nevada Krinkee, was shot and killed while trying to serve a trespass warning on Tuesday, February 13 in the town of Sheridan. Mr. Krinkee, an Army veteran, was sworn into the Sheridan Police Department in mid-October of 2017.
Apparently, the man who is accused of killing Sergeant Krinkee fled the scene of the shooting, which occurred at a Laramie intersection, and barricaded himself inside of a residence in the city. Officers then set up a perimeter around the residence and evacuated non-combatants. The standoff continued into Wednesday, local media reported.
Chief Kolitska of the Sheridan Police Department released a statement shortly after the shooting in which he explained what happened. He began, “It is with great sadness that Sgt. Nevada Krinkee, a six and a half year veteran of the department, was shot and killed while attempting to serve a trespass warning on a male subject near the intersection of 5th Street and Val Vista Street. Sgt. Krinkee was transported to Sheridan Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to the injuries.“
Continuing, Chief Kolitska added, “The male subject fled the scene and was located a short time later in the area of 6th and N. Sheridan Avenue. Members of the Sheridan Police Department, Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office, and the Wyoming Highway Patrol established a perimeter and determined the subject was barricaded inside a residence. Other residents in the vicinity were evacuated from the area. Members of the Gillette Police Department tactical unit and Crisis Negotiators responded to assist and a stand-off ensued. The scene is still active at this time.“
He then said, “The investigation is being turned over to The Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation. Additional information regarding this tragic event will be available through the DCI Public Information Officer. The entire department is shocked and saddened by this senseless act and appreciate all the thoughts and prayers from our community. Please respect the privacy of our brother Nevada’s family through this trying time.”
The Sheridan Mayor released a statement shortly after the shooting, saying, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Police Sergeant Nevada Krinkee, who was killed in the line of duty while selflessly serving our community. His loss serves as a solemn and heartbreaking reminder of the risks our law enforcement officers face every day. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sergeant Krinkee’s family, loved ones, the Sheridan Police Department, and other first responders during this difficult time.”
The First Federal Bank and Trust of Sheridan helped administer a fundraiser for Sergeant Krinkee’s family. Explaining how those who wish to do so can donate, it said, “In light of Tuesday’s events, a benefit account for Sergeant Krinkee’s family has been set up at First Federal. Please make checks payable to Karla Krinkee or FBO Nevada Krinkee and our team will make sure the funds are deposited to the account.“
