In a moment that infuriated many online even more than they already were, Whoopi Goldberg refused to comment on the matter of the small, family-owned bakery that she had attacked on air just days before, claiming that it had refused to serve her because of her political views.
Making that original attack, Whoopi declared, as the audience gasped, “Now, I should tell you, Charlotte Russe has no political leanings, and the place that made these refused to make them for me. They said that their ovens had gone down, all kinds of stuff, but folks went and got them anyway, which is why I’m not telling you who made them.”
Continuing, Whoopi went on to say, after lobbing the accusation the bakery’s way, “Perhaps they did not like my politics. But that’s okay, because you know what? Listen, this is my mother’s celebration. Pick these up and celebrate with me and my mom. Thank you everyone for celebrating my birthday today.”
The bakery owner, Jill Holtermann, strenuously denied the claims. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Holtermann said, “They’d asked us and we were having trouble with our boilers.” She then noted that she’d declined Whoopi’s orders because she “didn’t want to make a commitment that I can’t carry through.” Holtermann noted that the bakery building is about a century old, so it frequently has equipment issues that get in the way of orders, making it difficult to take orders well in advance, as the boilers or other equipment could always fail at an unexpected time.
Whoopi, in a video posted online, commented on things generally without actually addressing what bakery it was or whether their reasoning might have been what the case really was, not her baseless claim about political bias. Beginning, she snapped, “I never mentioned the name of the bakery or the location.”
Continuing, Goldberg then repeated the same story as she originally did without commenting on the nature of the bakery’s reasoning. She said. “It does seem a little odd that when we called a few weeks before birthday, and we were told they couldn’t process the order for my birthday, because of an equipotent failure.”
Further, Whoopi insisted, without providing other details, that because they were able to take another order, that meant they should have been able to take hers. She said, “But somehow they were able to accept an order of a different 48 of the same dessert when somebody else called without using my name.” Watch Whoopi here:
One commenter on X, sounding off on Whoopi’s claims and the video she released, said, “Well what’s the name of the bakery and the location then? You’re just not use to getting fact checked and you thought you could destroy a small family business over nothing.” Another said, “Honestly she can’t even apologize? Like this lady has no ounce of accountability at all.”
Still another commenter wrote, “Yes, Whoppi does lie. We all know that. She loves playing the victim. I hope they sue your backside off.” Another said, “Go away Whoopi!!! And I hope that Bakery sues your ass off!! You displayed their signature cupcakes for the world to see.” On a similar note, yet another commenter added, “Trying to deny before the lawsuits kick in.”
