Amid continual signs of society decay in California, recent reports indicate that the Sacramento City Attorney’s Office issued a warning against retail giant Target that it will face fines for reporting the vast number of theft incidences that occur at its stores. While the Golden State has garnered a reputation for its soft-on-crime policies, it increasingly seems they are simultaneously taking on a hard-on-businesses approach as well.
According to reports, Sacramento officials have threatened Target located on Riverside Blvd. with an “administrative fine.” Locals claim the retail store has been incessantly victimized by rampant retail theft, resorting to what any sensible business would do in notifying the authorities. However, Target is discovering that they are being punished by asking the city to carry out the duties they are paid tax dollars to provide.
As the California Glob put it, the threat to the big box retailer is reminiscent of something out of a George Orwell novel. “We have officially entered George Orwell’s 1984. Think about that – Target reports retail theft to the city of Sacramento hoping for any enforcement, and the city’s attorney gets mad that there are so many “nuisance” calls.” the outlet wrote, criticizing the move from the city.
Headlines would suggest that California’s decline is only worsening, where its cities have been plagued by issues such as criminal activity, homelessness, and open-air drug usage. All the while, progressive leadership in the state is seemingly unable to come up with any substantive solutions for the crises the state endures.
The American Tribune recently reported on a statement from famous Food Network chef Andrew Gruel, who sounded off on California’s soft-on-crime policies, which are degrading the state’s conditions. Gruel vowed that he would never open any new restaurants in California until its elected leaders restored order in the once-great state, opting to take his businesses elsewhere in the country.
“At this point, it’s criminal on behalf of the DA and officials who advocate for this soft-on-crime insanity. There is no nuance to this; it’s intentional. How many thousands of cases do we need to see to know it leads to more violence? Everyone, left, right, and center, can see this. The goal is to instill fear and destroy communities,” Gruel wrote on X.
Furthermore, Gruel, who serves as the CEO of American Gravy Restaurant Group, commented on the deteriorating conditions that are making it difficult to conduct business. “I will never open another restaurant in California ever again, I’ll only open outside of California. I’ll never open another business in California ever again. And two years ago, I didn’t think I would say that but that is the case today,” the chef stated.
He continued, “So the increase in crime in California specifically, significantly affects both the consumer and the business owners. So from the business owners perspective, now we need to prepare for the inevitable crime that’s about to hit whether it’s burglaries whether it’s smashing grab, or even if it’s more than like the scammers, right, so that’s not covered as much because the smashing grab stuff makes the headlines, but it’s the scammers. It’s all these little scams everybody’s trying to rip you off because under $900 You’re not gonna get busted for it right and it’s much easier to do remotely or as some sort of like a dine and dash.”
