Famous actor Russell Crowe recently sat down with Joe Rogan, who praised the United States for being a “beacon of freedom” that comes with a “huge responsibility.” The New Zealand native sat down for a recent podcast episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience,” where the two discussed his recent move back to the United States.
“Flying into New York the other day and it’s a palpable difference in the way you know people regard each other and the way they talk,” Crowe said, describing the unique nature of United States culture. However, he was not blind to the troubling circumstances that the nation currently faces. “But there’s a fear in everybody at the moment here and I’m just not sure where that’s going to go,” he said.
“Doesn’t feel healthy,” he further stated. Rogan commented in agreement.“Yeah, it doesn’t feel healthy for me either.” The actor further described the global hegemony America has maintained since the conclusion of World War II. “Here’s the thing with America, right? You’ve got to remember that it is the beacon of freedom for everybody in the world,” he continued.
Crowe noted the timeless adage that with power comes responsibility. “It’s a huge responsibility,” he said. “If people are looking for something to change in their life or something positive, the vast majority of people will look towards America and say, ‘well, that’s the beacon. I want to live like that where people can say what.”
“‘People can be of all different races, religions or whatever and still be in the same community,’” Crowe said, describing the American ideals. “It’s so important that America remains healthy into the future for everyone, not just for Americans.”
At another point during the interview, Crowe sounded off on the state of US politics while discussing the musical Evita, which centers around Argentine political leader Eva Veron. Crowe claimed politics in the States had become “what can we get away with?” “It was used in the musical Evita… (the phrase) ‘politics is the art of the possible’. It’s not really connected to anything,” he said.
“You’re seeing that now in American politics more than ever, because the person that’s actually in office is saying what she’s going to do if she gets in office,” Rogan interjected. “You’re (Kamala) there,” Crowe responded. “This is madness… she’s been in there for three years, what are you talking about, this is crazy,” Rogan said.
Crowe suggested that Americans are too focused on what party they are affiliated with rather than their policies. “You’re just not going to get people of quality stepping into that world anymore. There’s probably hundreds of potentially incredible presidents in this country, but they’re too smart to walk that way,” he said. “It’s picking a color, and no matter what happens under the banner of that color you’re sticking with the colour,” he added.“That’s not really going to help anyone.”
The actor also touched on the state of Australian politics. “Now you have a situation where in the parliament – you have a group of them (Teal MPs) – the main party has to deal with the fact that those independents are going to bring a non-party line series of points to the argument,” he said.
