Former acting U.S. Attorney in Sacramento Michele Beckwith, who was booted from her position by the Trump administration over her stance on immigration enforcement being contrary to that of the president, has found new employment with California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s team. Beckwith will serve as Newsom’s deputy legal affairs secretary, which means she’ll be able to provide the governor and state agencies with legal counsel, marking it as a highly influential position.
As background, Beckwith was given her pink slip by the Trump administration after she got into verbal fisticuffs with Border Patrol Chief Greg Bovino concerning a court order on immigration arrests. On July 15, Beckwith was fired just a few short hours after informing Bovino that a court order banned him from performing arrests in a region stretching from the Oregon border to the city of Bakersfield, California, without reasonable suspicion of federal law violations.
Within a few days of Beckwith being kicked to the curb, Bovino raided a Home Depot parking lot, where a total of eight arrests were made. Newsom immediately came to Beckwith’s defense in a post on X, saying, “Trump has fired the top federal prosecutor in Sacramento because she insisted on following the law. WAKE UP, AMERICA. DEMOCRACY IS ON THE BRINK!”
Tara Gallegos, a spokesperson representing Newsom, spoke with Fox News about Beckwith’s hiring, saying, “Michele brings to our office more than 15 years of legal experience and invaluable knowledge of the law. Trump’s loss is California’s gain.”
“To me, it’s not political — it’s existential for our country,” Beckwith went on to say in an interview with The New York Times. “So if there’s something I can do to assist in keeping our democracy and Constitution alive, that is what I am happy to do.” Beckwith’s termination went down amid a feud between Newsom and President Donald Trump, which is still ongoing. Both men have gone head-to-head over several issues, particularly immigration.
Trump’s latest strike against Newsom is an announcement from the Department of Transportation stating it would be withholding $40 million in funding for California after discovering that the state was not in compliance with the DOT’s English Language Proficiency standards.
“I put states on notice this summer: enforce the Trump Administration’s English language requirements or the checks stop coming. California is the only state in the nation that refuses to ensure big rig drivers can read our road signs and communicate with law enforcement. This is a fundamental safety issue that impacts you and your family on America’s roads,” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated.

Several deadly truck crashes have been connected to illegals who were able to obtain commercial driver’s licenses from the Golden State. One such crash involved Jashanpreet Singh, who is accused of operating a truck while under the influence, resulting in a crash that killed three innocent people. It was confirmed by the White House that Singh obtained his CDL license from California.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed that the DOT is in the process of dropping the hammer on the issuing of CDLs after finding a “disturbing pattern” of licenses being handed out to illegal immigrants. Fox News reached out to the Justice Department concerning the matter, but they declined to comment. Watch Leavitt here:
