In what is shaping up to be a bleak night for Republicans headed into the second half of Trump’s second terms, with the midterms developing poorly, one bright spot has arisen in Kentucky, where Andy Barr appears to have defeated Democrat Charles Booker and so will be replacing notoriously anti-Trump RINO Mitch McConnell.
As background, McConnell announced on his 83rd birthday, back in February of 2025, that he would be retiring. “Seven times my fellow Kentuckians have sent me to the Senate,” he said on the Senate floor. he added, “Every day in between, I’ve been humbled by the trust they place in me to do their business right here. Representing our commonwealth has been the honor of a lifetime. I will not seek this honor an eighth time. My current term in the Senate will be my last.”
In any case, McConnell retired, and Barr won the primary to be the Republican who would replace him, an important addition to the Republican Senate contingent. Nick Sortor, posting about the matter at 7:42 pm CST, wrote, “Republican Andy Barr WINS Kentucky’s Senate race, DEFEATING Democrat Charles Booker, per DDHQ This is Mitch McConnell’s old seat. Thankfully, McConnell is almost GONE.”
Commenters on the post left messages like, “McConnell got the Biden/Feinstein treatment and should have stepped down like 10 years ago” and “McConnell’s seat stays red, and this time it goes to a senator who’s actually on the same page as the President. Kentucky gave Charles Booker the same answer it gave him in 2022.”
Endorsing Barr back in May of 2026, President Trump wrote, “Proven Political Winner Andy Barr is running for the United States Senate in the Great Commonwealth of Kentucky, a place I love and WON BIG, six times, including Primaries, in 2016, 2020, and 2024!”
He added, “I know Andy well, and he is always a Vote we can count on because he knows what it takes to GET THINGS DONE and, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! I Endorsed Andy years ago, in his first Race, and all others, for Congress, and he never let me down — He is a 100% solid American Patriot! Andy Barr is a Strong Supporter of TERMINATING THE FILIBUSTER, before the Democrats do it (which they will, on Day One, if they get control of the U.S. Senate!).”
The president continued, He will do everything in his power to get it done. It is desperately needed by the Republican Party to pass the SAVE AMERICA ACT, and all other things necessary for a strong and brilliant Country! In the Senate, Andy will fight tirelessly to Grow our Economy, Cut Taxes and Regulations, Champion the Interests of our Amazing Farmers and Ranchers, Promote MADE IN THE U.S.A., Unleash American Energy DOMINANCE, Keep our Border SECURE, Stop Migrant Crime, Strengthen our Military/Veterans, Safeguard our Elections, and Defend our always under siege Second Amendment.”

He concluded, “Andy is the only Candidate who will easily defeat the Democrat in what will be one of the most important Elections in American History. He will help ensure Victory against these Radical Left, Country Destroying, THUGS. Andy Barr has my Complete and Total Endorsement to be the next United States Senator from Kentucky – HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!”
That faith was well-founded, as Barr managed a substantial win on a night that was quite poor for Republicans otherwise.
