When Keith Olbermann decided to take a shot at Riley Gaines by calling her “stupid” and “unsuccessful,” he definitely didn’t expect for the ex-swimmer to push back with proof of her awards and accolades for a stunning athletic career. Gaines has shown that she is not one to be messed with and that she is not going to sit idly by as the mainstream media attempts to drag her name through the mud.
Like any good argument, Olbermann took to Twitter to kick off the battle, posting about Gaines’ college accolades as a swimmer and diminishing the athletic feats that she achieved. The liberal show host, formerly with ESPN and MSNBC, also found a way to work in a shot at Donald Trump while he sent his message.
Olbermann Tweeted, “Second team all-conference. Happily for nasty, stupid, unsuccessful transphobe @Riley_Gaines_ she has no reputation to ruin Anyhoo, don’t forget to listen to the Countdown podcast because Trump also sucks:”
He posted that along with a clip from his podcast.

In another ridiculous Tweet, Olbermann said that Gaines should “just address the reality and move past it? You sucked at swimming. That’s why you lost.” In one of the most epic Twitter moves since Elon Musk took over the Twitter platform and renamed it X, a community fact check sits under Olbermann’s Tweet informing readers of the absurdity of his claim.
The fact check says, “Riley Gaines was a very successful swimmer ending her College ‘Wildcat’ career as one of the most decorated swimmers in the program’s history. She played an instrumental role in the Wildcats clinching their first ever conference championship title, in 2021.”
All of this drama started when biological male Lia Thomas defeated Gaines in a swimming competition in 2022 at the Division 1 National Championship. Ever since Gaines has been trying to use her platform to promote the sanctity of women’s sports leagues.
Former University of Pennsylvania swimmer Paula Scanlan, the school which Lia Thomas attended, also spoke out in defense of Lia Thomas. She said, “Your political bias blinds you and dismissive views like yours embolden men to change in front of us. Why don’t you address the reality that women’s spaces are being invaded and many women are harmed by this narrative.”
Olbermann is of course in a bit of a sticky situation here, as his whole career has been spent with the mainstream media, and so the friends and connections that he has built find it necessary for him to continue pandering to the left’s woke ideologies.
For Gaines, however, she has found a niche where she can speak her truth and be praised by millions of Americans every time that she does so. Gaines is spearheading a movement that is at the forefront of the Right’s culture battle, and for all of our sake, I hope that she never gives up.
