U.S. Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE), who has made it his life’s mission to slam President Donald Trump over his foreign policy platform, announced that, rather than just retiring once his current term wraps up, he is actually considering resigning from his seat immediately because of Trump’s efforts to end the Russo-Ukraine War. Had this course of action been taken, there would have been no loss of love between Bacon, Trump, and his supporters in Congress.
As background, the president’s peace plan, which includes a total of 28 points, is designed to create a U.S.-brokered framework to help end what has shaped up to be the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War II. One part of the plan that has proven to be controversial among those in Congress who are all-in on Ukraine is the requirement that the country make territorial concessions along lines of areas where Russia is currently in control.
Other requirements include affirming Ukraine’s sovereignty, along with Russia signing a nonaggression pact with both Ukraine and other European neighbors. The plan also mandates limits be placed on the eastward expansion of NATO and creates a dialogue between Russia and NATO that is to be mediated by the United States.
Ukraine has already agreed to most of the terms of Trump’s plan, with administration officials stating only a handful of minor details still remaining to be worked out, according to Trending Politics News. A few revisions to the plan have already been made, removing some of Russia’s demands. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is supportive of the changes to the plan saying it makes peace “doable” and has requested a meeting with the president to finalize the deal.
The more establishment-oriented Republicans, who tend to be warhawks, including the cantankerous Bacon, have expressed anger and frustration with the plan. The Nebraska lawmaker recently spoke with Axios, saying he was “so angry” at the proposal he “thought about” resigning now instead of waiting to complete his term.
During the interview, Bacon took an opportunity to fire off a number of criticisms about President Trump’s foreign policy envoy Steve Witkoff, referring to the plan as the “Witkoff Ukrainian surrender plan,” apparently ignoring the fact that Zelenskyy was pleased with the plan and ready to get the ball moving to bring peace to the war-torn region.
What made Bacon decide against resigning early is that, “in the end I have a commitment to our constituents to fulfill my term.” He then added that he shared his feelings about the deal with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA). He then stated that he did not discuss the possibility of his resignation during the fiery chat with Johnson.

Should Bacon change his mind once again and go through with his resignation, it would make a huge mess for congressional Republicans who are holding onto control of the House by a razor-thin margin. The House will already be down a member for several weeks once Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s resignation becomes effective on January 5, 2026. The GOP will then have a majority of only four seats at 218 to the Democrats’ 214, with Democrats having four vacant seats.
