Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) has introduced a new bill that will ban the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) from issuing certain grants to cities and states that give housing assistance to illegal aliens or that have sanctuary policies in place. The “No Housing Welfare for Illegal Aliens Act” would stop HUD from handing out grants under the Community Development Block Grant Program and the Home Program to areas using tax dollars to provide housing for illegal immigrants.
“For too long, hardworking Americans have been forced to watch their tax dollars bankroll benefits for individuals who broke our laws to enter this country,” Roy said in an interview with Breitbart News. Sanctuary cities, counties, and states would also be banned from receiving these grants, should the legislation be passed into law.
The NHWIA Act would also keep these jurisdictions from distributing grant funds to third-party entities that offer housing assistance to illegal aliens, which Roy stated is a key step in closing a welfare loophole. “The No Housing Welfare for Illegal Aliens Act puts Americans first by ending housing subsidies for illegal aliens, shutting down loopholes for mixed-status households, and cutting off federal grants to sanctuary cities that defy federal immigration enforcement,” Roy explained.
“Federal housing assistance should go to American citizens and legal residents — not reward immigration lawbreakers,” he added, according to Breitbart. The administration has been looking for ways to shut down loopholes connected to mixed-status households, where American citizens or legal immigrants are living with illegal immigrants and are eligible for household benefits.
The new legislation would take the rule that was issued by President Donald Trump’s HUD, which requires that all individuals of a household either be American citizens or legal immigrants in order to receive housing benefits. Data from the National Low Income Housing Coalition suggests that over 80,000 households with illegal aliens are now receiving taxpayer-funded housing benefits.
One individual who sounded off in the comment section was enthusiastic about the new bill, explaining that the Constitution was designed to protect the rights of American citizens, not illegal aliens. “Bravo. Don’t give them any money. Let them leave the USA and form their own country. The Constitution protects American citizens, not illegal aliens,” the user wrote.
“The Democratic Party strategy is to surround Americans with illegal immigrant hordes, put them on welfare, make the middle class pay for them, and then take away the American citizens’ right to vote,” he added. Another person commented, “Great idea! Why has nobody else introduced this before? If these scofflaw cities want to have illegals, we should not be subsidizing them in any way; let them shoulder all the incurred costs. They may quickly learn shielding illegals is a bad idea.”

“Any federal money given to illegal aliens should be ILLEGAL. It often is but DIMS doing it anyway… which is also a crime against THE PEOPLE… only some very very small exceptions… end any kind of gift card, free everything.. no phone, no plan, no free food, no free housing, no free HC, no free ANYMORE,” another person stated in the comment section.
