Republican Congressman Infamous for Nasty Affair Leaves House GOP in the Lurch by Retiring to Make More in the Private Sector

In a shocking announcement, Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) abruptly resigned from Congress on July 20, 2025. Conservatives were enraged because of a raft of recent scandals associated with Green, as well as the electoral consequences of his decision to retire.

For context, his departure narrows the GOP’s House majority to 219-212, significantly shifting the balance of power. After his announcement, Rep. Green endorsed Matt Van Epps, a decorated veteran, to replace him in Tennessee’s 7th District.

Such was shown when conservatives roasted the departing congressmen for their selfishness. One such comment, posted on July 21, 2025, said, “🚨 BREAKING: Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) has just RESIGNED from Congress, reducing the GOP’s majority. He just ran for re-election months ago, and is now resigning because he wants a different job. These people are incredibly selfish. We need a STAUNCH MAGA Republican in this seat!”

Reacting to the same post, another prominent conservative blasted Green for his history os scandal, saying, “Good riddance. My former rep— Mark Green who made headlines last fall for having an affair & walking out on his wife / family after 35 years of marriage. Self-serving a-hole to the bitter end. @RepMarkGreen.”

Another social media user was angered by the retirement, and blasted the former congressman for his selfishness. The post read, “Once again, personal ambition > public duty. Elise Stefanik refused to take an ambassadorship to avoid shrinking the majority. But Mark Green? He bolts for a cushy private sector gig. This is the same Mark Green who made headlines last fall for having an affair and walking out on his wife and family after 35 years of marriage. Self-serving to the bitter end.”

In his announcement, Green stated that he was motivated to leave due to financial concerns. He said, “It is with a heavy heart that I announce my retirement from Congress. Recently, I was offered an opportunity in the private sector that was too exciting to pass up. As a result, today I notified the Speaker and the House of Representatives that I will resign from Congress as soon as the House votes once again on the reconciliation package.”

Speaking about his district, he self-servingly referenced his conservative values. He claimed, “They asked me to deliver on the conservative values and principles we all hold dear, and I did my level best to do so. Along the way, we passed historic tax cuts, worked with President Trump to secure the border, and defended innocent life.”

Adding to these remarks, the former congressman said that he wanted to pass Trump’s budget before he stepped down. He stated, “Though I planned to retire at the end of the previous Congress, I stayed to ensure that President Trump’s border security measures and priorities make it through Congress.”

Concluding his remarks, the Tennessee Republican endorsed Matt Van Epps wholeheartedly. He declared, “Matt Van Epps has my complete and total endorsement… a true warrior.” Reacting, Van Epps said, “Congressman Green has left some very large shoes to fill, but I’m ready to step in and continue his work on behalf of Tennesseans.”

In a social media post announcing his retirement, the controversial republican reminisced about his time in politics, saying, “It’s with a heavy heart that I say farewell. To my constituents across Tennessee’s 7th District—thank you. The trust you put in me is humbling. I will look back fondly on my years of serving as your voice in Washington.”
