A TV news reporter got the shock of her life when she dashed out to cover what she thought was a “breaking news” story, only to find out moments later that, strangely, her boyfriend was at the scene, down on bended knee, a ring in his hand. This is a pretty brilliant way to propose, so take notes, guys.
Valerie Bell, a journalist who works for WBMA in Birmingham, Alabama, drove to what she thought was a disturbing domestic violence incident close to a local lake.Bell pulled up in a car and actually spoke to a police officer, according to the New York Post.
However, behind her came the love of her life, a firefighter named Blake Bjornson, who had a box clasped in his hands as he got down on one knee, about to spring the big question that would change both of their lives forever.
So you’re probably wondering what she said in response. It was a very fast “yes,” with zero hesitation. Clearly, this was something Bell was excited about. The two then exchange a loving kiss in front of all the first responders who were assembled at the scene of the fake incident. “I’m just trying to process what just happened. Oh my God! I thought there were kids in the water. That’s so bad,” she went on to say in the video footage taken when she realized it was her who was going to be taking the big plunge.
“Here I was, thinking I was going to breaking news,” Bell stated in a post published on Instagram. “But little did I know, it was all part of a massive collaborative plan to pull off one heck of a surprise.” Bell thanks Bjornson and Bill Castle, the chief photographer for WBMA, along with the first responders, for helping to make the proposal a special day she won’t soon forget.
“Can’t wait to spend forever with you. I’m the most lucky girl,” Bell remarked on Twitter. The station where Bell is employed elaborated on the proposal saying, “Bjornson, who works as a firefighter, pulled together some of his friends (including) the Pell City Police Department to help pull off the proposal story of a lifetime.”
Local law enforcement also gave Bell a big shoutout concerning the memorable proposal. “Congratulations Valerie Bell and Blake! Thank you for letting us be a small part of your special day,” the department wrote in a post on Facebook. On the WBMA website it says, “Always inquisitive and a go-getter, it’s been Valerie’s dream to be a reporter ever since she was in the third grade.”
