Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, the House Judiciary Committee Chairman and an ally of former President Trump’s, is reportedly preparing to demand testimony from members of the office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg as an indictment of former President Trump is soon expected to come from that office.
That report came from Politico, which reported Monday morning that Rep. Jordan and other GOP leaders are planning to demand testimony from DA Bragg’s office as it appears ready to indict former President Trump as soon as Tuesday over a campaign funds misdemeanor charge. Politico, in that report, said:
Republicans are discussing firing off letters summoning employees of the Manhattan DA’s office for sworn testimony, according to a GOP official familiar with the plans. The potential request comes amid speculation about why the hush-money case was suddenly resurrected after being back-burnered by both state and federal prosecutors.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the plans are not final, noted that Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a longtime Trump ally and close friend, is “fully supportive and pushing folks to be aggressive here.”
Further, Politico’s Rachel Bade discussed the matter on Politico Playbook’s podcast on Monday, saying “If that happens, Republicans want to have a response ready to go. They say they’re going to investigate the Manhattan District Attorney, who would be bringing these charges against Donald Trump.”
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene told Politico that “He [DA Alvin Bragg] should come testify before Congress,” and Rep. Jim Jordan said, “This is a [George] Soros-backed, crazy, left-wing prosecutor … and he is doing this purely political sham.”
However, Politico also claimed that even if Jordan and his allies hold such a hearing, it’s unlikely that DA Bragg and his staff would answer many questions about the charges. In its words:
Jordan didn’t answer questions about whether he’d subpoena Bragg. Even if he does, it’s almost impossible to imagine Bragg or his subordinates answering questions about an ongoing probe or prosecution. While Republicans could threaten to hold him in contempt of Congress, the Justice Department would be unlikely to press charges in a partisan dispute.
Trump, for his part, has been taking to Truth Social to sound off on the issue. In a recent post, for example, he said:
IT IS THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY OF MANHATTAN WHO IS BREAKING THE LAW BY USING THE FAKE AND FULLY DISCREDITED TESTIMONY (EVEN BY THE SDNY!) OF A CONVICTED LIAR, FELON AND JAILBIRD, MICHAEL COHEN, TO INCREDIBLY PERSECUTE, PROSECUTE, AND INDICT A FORMER PRESIDENT, AND NOW LEADING (BY FAR!) PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, FOR A CRIME THAT DOESN’T EXIST. ALVIN BRAGG SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE CRIME OF “INTERFERENCE IN A PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.”
Trump also accused Bragg of taking a huge amount of money from George Soros, saying, “Just Out: District Attorney Alvin Bragg received in EXCESS OF ONE MILLION DOLLARS from Radical Left Enemy of “TRUMP,” George Soros. Bragg is also very close to the Clinton Campaign. Republicans and Conservatives are more UNITED than they have been in many years. Even Democrats don’t like what’s going on with the Manhattan D.A. This is a continuation of the greatest Witch Hunt of all time!“
