Florida Governor and 2024 GOP hopeful Ron DeSantis recently traveled to California for a meeting with GOP donors. During the meeting, he made some good points on cultural issues but was soft on China when discussing what his administration would do about the communist state and its cheating on trade.
Some of the topics DeSantis discussed were ones that he made conservative points about. For example, one of the individuals there said, “DeSantis shared clear and pragmatic plans on how to take charge of the out of control federal bureaucracy, only worsening under Biden, and getting government back to working for the people instead of against them.”
Further, he talked about the success of the Florida economy and education system, which makes sense given his war on woke Disney, encouragement of conservative businesses, and his fight to keep creeps from discussing sex with young kids in school.
However, on the issue of China and global supply chain problems, people in the meeting said that DeSantis came out against tariffs and that Trump’s attempts to put China on its back foot and cow it before bringing it to the negotiating table were “ineffective.”
Trump allies on Twitter were furious with DeSantis’ comments about tariffs, using them to make the case that DeSantis still harbors neocon foreign policy views and is in thrall to his Big Business donors.
For example, Rogan O’Handley, a lawyer and former Tucker guest who goes by “DC Draino” on Twitter, used the incident to note that DeSantis is heavily backed by Ken Griffin of Citadel Securities, which was just given access to China’s financial markets and is connected to CCP venture capital. As he put it (punctuation added for ease of reading): “Wow – DeSantis confirms to CA donors he won’t reimpose China tariffs & I know exactly why: Ken Griffin & Citadel Securities. Citadel was just granted new access to Chinese stock & bond markets after they partnered w/Sequoia Capital in a $1.1B deal. As you know, Sequoia is the biggest US VC in China & funds CCP military tech with US pension fund $$. Looks like the Griffin $$ comes w/CCP strings and DeSantis is playing ball .Only 1 US President has truly taken on China in the last 40+ years and the DOJ just indicted him.”

Similarly, David Giglio reminded readers both that Ken Griffin donated millions to DeSantis and that DeSantis voted for the Trans Pacific Partnership trade deal while in Congress, saying, “At a fundraiser in Coalinga, CA yesterday, hosted by two of Kevin McCarthy’s biggest donors, Ron DeSantis came out AGAINST Donald Trump’s tariffs on China. This shouldn’t surprise anyone. It’s simply foolish to believe that Ken Griffin is going to flood DeSantis with $500 million and then allow him to implement America First trade policies once elected. Let’s also not forget, that DeSantis voted in favor of the disastrous TPP deal when he was in Congress.”
Continuing, Giglio added that there is no such thing as Trumpism without Trump, much as Obama was lying when he made his infamous comment about insurance. “The saying ‘you can have Trump without the Trump’ will go down as the biggest lie since ‘if you like your insurance, you can keep it.‘”
Giglio then quoted a Kevin McCarthy backer at the fundraiser event where DeSantis came out against tariffs on China as saying, “I think Trump did a lot of really good things for us before he did some not-so-good things for us, us being conservative Republicans. I would personally be delighted if he changed his mind … and didn’t run. But I doubt very much that that’s going to happen.”
