Former president and leading Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump recently sounded off on a Biden-supported bipartisan border bill during a Las Vegas rally this past weekend. Biden stated in a press release that he would be willing to “shut down” the border if Congress signed the bill into law.
“What’s been negotiated would — if passed into law — be the toughest and fairest set of reforms to secure the border we’ve ever had in our country,” the president said. “It would give me, as president, a new emergency authority to shut down the border when it becomes overwhelmed. And if given that authority, I would use it the day I sign the bill into law.”
Trump weighed in on the bill, asserting that the bill would only worsen the ongoing migrant crisis. The former president suggested that the outcome of the proposed legislation would perpetuate the record-breaking illegal immigration while simultaneously diverting billions of taxpayers’ dollars to foreign interests.
“The so-called border security deal Biden is gushing out and pushing out is not designed to stop illegal immigration,” Trump told the audience. “It’s designed to continue the invasion of America while sending billions of dollars to Ukraine and other countries.”
Drawing from his own experience as President of the United States, Donald Trump pointed out that Biden already has the authority to take action on the border. “The fact is that if Joe Biden truly wanted to secure the border, he doesn’t really need a bill,” Trump said. “I didn’t need a bill. I did it without a bill. I did it with the current laws. I used Border Patrol.”
The leading GOP primary candidate denounced the bill, calling it a “betrayal” of America that he refuses to support. “There is zero chance I will support this horrible open-border betrayal of America. It’s not going to happen,” Trump said. “And I’ll fight it all the way.”
Trump further explained that he would rather Congress produce no legislation if it meant the proposed bill would not get passed. Supporting Trump’s view, House Speaker Mike Johnson noted that the bill would not pass his chamber.
“[The Senate was] getting ready to pass a very bad bill and I’ll tell you what. I’d rather have no bill than a bad bill,” Mr. Trump added. “And that’s what was happening in the House…[House Speaker Mike Johnson] said it’s dead on arrival in the House. We want either a strong bill or no bill.” Watch Trump here:
Other prominent Republicans have called out the Biden-backed border bill, echoing similar sentiment to former President Trump, where they believe it will only worsen the disastrous border crisis. For example, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called the bill a “farce” while suggesting it would “destroy” American sovereignty.
During Trump’s rally in Las Vegas, the former president unapologetically slammed Biden, outright stating, “Joe Biden is a threat to Democracy” at one point. ” It’s no wonder Joe Biden and his thugs are so desperate to stop us. They know that we are the only ones who can stop them. They know that. That’s why they’re weaponizing law enforcement for high level election interference, you know, and I’m the victim of it, but that’s okay,” he added.
