In the wake of Speaker Mike Johnson seeming to betray the MAGA base by initially going along with a massive, 1500-page spending bill packed full of leftist pork, a number of conservative members of Congress, led by Sen. Rand Paul, chimed in and called for Elon Musk to be made the next Speaker of the House, replacing Johnson.
Elon, as background, led the resistance to the spending package on X (formerly Twitter), raising Republican ire against Speaker Johnson for initially going along with such an obviously leftist-friendly spending bill, eventually relenting a bit when Johnson ushered through a much-slimmed down version of the bill. Leading the pushback initially, Musk had written, “Any member of the House or Senate who votes for this outrageous spending bill deserves to be voted out in 2 years!”
Resistance to the bill grew into a major deal. For example, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) appeared on Fox News Channel’s “Hannity” and said, “It’s ridiculous. It’s a horrible plan. I can’t believe that Republican leadership ever cooked it up.” He added, “Clearly, they didn’t talk to Trump about it, and I tell you what, we need to have a serious look at who’s leading this Congress because if this is the best they could do, I mean, it’s just it’s total incompetence, this is a disaster.”
Continuing on much the same point, Sen. Hawley went on to add, “Under this bill, they’d shut the government down again, have to do this all over again, have to raise the debt ceiling again later, the same year. This bill right here would add hundreds of billions of dollars to the deficit, and the worst part is, it is all for Dem priorities.”
In any case, as the issue became a prominent one, Sen. Rand Paul called on the House to make Elon the Speaker, saying, “The Speaker of the House need not be a member of Congress . . . Nothing would disrupt the swamp more than electing Elon Musk . . . think about it . . . nothing’s impossible. (not to mention the joy at seeing the collective establishment, aka ‘uniparty,’ lose their ever-lovin’ minds).”
Very entertainingly, the idea got Democratic political strategist Jimmy Williams quite angry. Angrily replying to Rand Paul and rejecting the idea out of hand, he wrote, “Senators should stick to Senating and House Members should stick to their Chamber. No House Member gives a damn what a Senator thinks about who should be Speaker.”
But one actual member of Congress liked the idea. For example, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene wrote, “I’d be open to supporting @elonmusk for Speaker of the House. DOGE can only truly be accomplished by reigning in Congress to enact real government efficiency. The establishment needs to be shattered just like it was yesterday. This could be the way.”
Watch Johnson try to defend the bill here:
Another post that went viral on X called for Vivek Ramaswamy to be made Speaker of the House. That post said, “IMO, Vivek Ramaswamy as Speaker of the House would send shockwaves through Washington. His unapologetic, America-first perspective aligns perfectly with Trump’s vision for the country. Unlike the current leadership, Vivek wouldn’t cave to the swamp’s endless spending demands or allow bloated bills like the disastrous Continuing Resolution to take center stage. Instead, he’d champion transparency, accountability, and a much-needed disruption of the status quo.”
It added, “Ramaswamy’s track record of challenging establishment narratives and embracing bold reforms makes him a natural choice to clean up Congress. He’s a leader who understands the need for fiscal responsibility and prioritizing the American people over special interests. Biden and the Democrats would be forced to face an entirely new level of opposition. In a time when the GOP desperately needs strong, fearless leadership, Vivek would be a game-changer. His business acumen and outsider perspective could restore trust in a Republican Party that has too often let its base down. America needs decisive leadership now more than ever, and Ramaswamy would deliver exactly that.”
