U.S. pro wrestling star Jamin Pugh, whose wrestling name was Jay Briscoe, has died at the young age of 38.
That death was announced by Tony Khan, the CEO of All Elite Wrestling and also the owner of Ring of Honor (ROH). He posted about Briscoe’s passing on Twitter, saying:
Sadly, Jamin Pugh has passed away. Known to fans as Jay Briscoe, he was a star in ROH for over 20 years, from the first show until today.
Jay and his brother Mark dominated ROH, reigning as champions to this day. We’ll do whatever we can to support his family.
Rest In Peace Jamin
What exactly Briscoe died from is unclear. Khan shared no details, nor did the statement released by Ring of Honor, which read “It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the tragic passing of Jamin Pugh, known to wrestling fans around the world as Jay Briscoe. Our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and his fans.”
Breitbart, however, noted that Briscoe’s passing might not be a typical “died young and suddenly” story, as there was a fatal accident in Laurel, Delaware. The Delaware State Police tweeted about the incident, saying.
⚠️ Traffic Alert, Laurel ⚠️
Laurel Road at Little Hill Road will be closed for an extended period due to a fatal accident. DSP on-scene.
Reporting on that accident’s connection to Briscoe, Breitbart said “Multiple reports from websites covering pro wrestling have claimed that Pugh died in a car accident in Delaware on Tuesday. Police in Delaware did indeed report a fatal accident on Tuesday but did not release the identity of those involved.”
Briscoe’s fellow wrestling stars and fans filled Khan’s comments with condolences for Briscoe, saying things like:
“Quality man that we lost. So very heartbreaking. My deepest condolences to all his loved ones. 💔”
“#RIP Condolences to his family. I will have to gather my thoughts to say more later. This is crushing.”
“The Briscoes were one of the greatest throwback tag teams of this era. They would have been stars in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and so on. What a sad loss.”
“Got a chance to watch him up close. He was a special performer. Rest in peace brother.”
“Rest in peace. Descanse en paz, prayers go out to his family and love ones.”
“I am so deeply saddened over this loss. I hate to see Tony pander online as he always does. It’s nice to see you volunteer to do whatever to support his family but where was that energy when you’ve had opportunity x 100 to put the Briscoes on tv and really change their life”
One commenter, whoever, noted that Khan and the wrestling league had attacked Briscoe when he was alive for not being sufficiently woke, saying “Where was this energy when he was alive? Oh that’s right calling him a homophobe. Take your fake feeling away IWC.”
