Speaking in a recent interview with Fox News Digital, country rock star Aaron Lewis sounded off about the failed cancellation attempt on him, discussing the controversy surrounding his support for former President Donald Trump and drumbeat of criticism of President Joe Biden. Lewis argued that what America needs is for people to rally around the Constitution and constitutional values.
Lewis said, during the Fox News Digital interview, that he had faced cancellation attempts before and was not particularly worried about this attempt on him. Particularly, Lewis said that those who listen to his music have heard his stances on things before, so he’s not overly worried about them finding something offensive and getting turned off by his music.
Making that point, Lewis noted that his past records have much the same content as his recent one, so few, if any people, would be surprised by the content and boycott him for it. He said, “Any of the things that anybody would have found offensive are already out there. The songs that are on the record that some might find offensive are already out.”
Continuing, he joked about that, saying that the attacks have already come and done what damage they can. so he no longer finds them particularly worrisome or troubling. He said, “They’ve taken their licks already. It’s funny. They take their licks and I play sold-out shows. So take your licks. Take your licks if it makes you feel better. It really doesn’t affect me.”
Lewis also noted that he has a powerful voice in his corner, as the record label president stood up for his ability to say what he wants. Describing that strong stand his record label president took for free speech and real art, Lewis said, “When I put out, ‘Am I the Only One,’ there was a public, outward calling for my cancellation and for me to lose my record deal and my record label president said, ‘Absolutely not,’ and he stood up for my ability to speak my feelings as an artist and to have the freedom of speech to do so. What is art if somebody else is telling you how to make it?”
Then, building on his comment about freedom of speech and patriotism, Lewis argued that there is a concerted attack on them that we must stand up to. “Those are the values that it seems there is a purposeful mechanism out there trying to destroy those values, trying to destroy the fabric” of America, he argued.
He continued, saying that the American people need to motivate themselves to stand up for the Constitution and the sort of government America should have, telling Fox News Digital, “The Constitution is what gives this country to us, the people. This country is not the government’s, and we’ve allowed it to get that way just out of laziness and disconnection.”
Still not done, Lewis told Fox News Digital that defending those values is our responsibility as Americans. He said, “It’s our responsibility. We are the caretakers of this country, and it is our responsibility to hand this country over to the next generation in a better state and in a better condition than we received it, and we are failing miserably.”
