The Biden Campaign has been rocked by yet more bad news, this time showing that one of the key pillars of the leftist voting coalition is turning away from him and the Democratic Party: younger voters. That bad news comes as President Biden and former President Trump are in a dead heat with voters headed into the summer and 2024 election, with it looking like both men will be their parties’ respective choices.
In fact, according to registered voters in an NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist National Poll that came out on Thursday, May 30, Biden currently stands at 50% and former President Trump at 48% among that demographic. The difference narrows to just one point among elected voters, who are leaning 50% Biden and 49% Trump.
The news is even better for former President Donald Trump when independent candidates are considered. With RFK Jr in the poll at 8%, the Green Party’s Jilly Stein in at 3%, and Cornel West in at 2%, Trump beats Biden 44% to 40%. It remains to be seen in which states RFK Jr., the strongest of the challengers will appear on the ballot, and it appears that he will not be in the debates.
But it is amongst younger voters that a huge shift has occurred. President Biden won younger voters by a 20 point margin in the 2020 election, Fox News Digital notes, but now Biden is just barely ahead among that demographic. Biden is ahead by just six points with those voters between 18 and 29, while his advantage is an even more dismal four-point lead with voters 45 and under.
Further, Trump’s performance with young voters is even better this month than last month, indicating he might be gaining support from the youth vote. According to an April Harvard Youth Poll, President Biden was ahead by jut eight points, winning 45% of the vote to Trump’s 37%. That’s a huge drop off from his 23-point lead over Trump at the same time before the 2020 election.
Speaking to Fox News about the decision, Marist College Institute for Public Opinion director Lee Miringoff said that young voters feel unconnected to Biden and are worried about issues, such as the cost of living, that are far from what Preisent Biden is focused on as he spends billions and billions abroad on, amongst other countries, Ukraine, Israel, and Gaza.
Miringoff said, “They don’t see a lot of connection to him.” He continued, “They’re worried about the cost of living, which isn’t reserved just for them, but clearly, as they envision moving into adulthood, cost of living, housing costs, how to get into that next step seems to be an obstacle.… They’re seeing the economy as a lot of other voters do — laying it on Biden’s doorstep at the moment.”
The Maris poll has more bad news for Biden and good news for Trump as well. According to it, Fox News Digital reports, less than a quarter of America’s younger voters approve of how Joe Biden is doing as president, with more than six in ten having an unfavorable opinion of him. Meanwhile, former President Trump has a positive reputation amongst younger voters with a 49% favorability rating.
