Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth dealt a blow to DEI in a recent memo to the Military Service Academies (MSAs). In his letter, Hegseth ordered that the prestigious military academics cease considering any factor other than merit in the admissions process.
For context, President Donald Trump, along with the members of his cabinet, have been waging a war against DEI policies. Specifically, the Trump administration has sought to end race-based admissions in higher education.
Such was shown when Pete Hegseth wrote a letter to the MSAs on May 9, 2025. He stated, “The Military Service Academies (MSAs) are elite warfighting institutions with long histories of producing world class military officers. The Department owes it to the Nation, our Service members, and the young Americans applying to the MSAs to ensure admissions to these prestigious institutions are based exclusively on merit.”
Explaining his reasoning, Hegseth added, “This ensures only the most qualified candidates are admitted, trained, and ultimately commissioned to lead the finest fighting force in history. Selecting anyone but the best erodes lethality, our warfighting readiness, and undercuts the culture of excellence in our Armed Forces.”
Referring back to one of Trump’s executive orders, the Secretary of Defense emphasized the need to address these woke policies. He explained, “In alignment with my January 29, 2025 memorandum, “Restoring America’s Fighting Force,” I direct the Secretaries of the Military Departments to certify within 30 days that, for purposes of the 2026 MSA admissions cycle, as well as all subsequent admissions cycles, the MSA admissions offices will: Apply no consideration of race, ethnicity, or sex; and Offer admission based exclusively on merit.”
Describing a few exceptions, Hegseth clarified, “Merit-based scores may give weight to unique athletic talent or other experiences such as prior military service or performance at the MSA preparatory school,” adding, “Going forward, MSAs shall rank-order candidates by merit-based scores.”
Laying out his plan for the future, he gave explicit instructions for the MSAs. Hegseth wrote, “It is the Department’s expectation that the highest-ranking candidates within each nomination category should receive appointments.”

Concluding his letter, Hegset stated, “I direct the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness to certify the MSAs are compliant with the merit-based admissions processes upon the completion of the 2026 MSA admissions cycle. The Department must remain steadfast in its pursuit of excellence and never compromise the high standards at our MSAs,” adding, “A strong officer corps is essential to ensuring the United States military remains the most lethal the world has ever known.”
Responding to the groundbreaking memo, Chief Pentagon Spokesman and Senior Advisor Sean Parnell wrote his own endorsement. He stated, “Today the Secretary of Defense directed the Secretaries of the Military Departments to certify their admissions are race-, ethnicity-, and sex-blind. Within 30 days, the Military Service Academies (MSAs) must confirm that admission will be based exclusively on merit for the 2026 admissions cycle and beyond,” explaining, “The Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness will oversee compliance with this guidance.”
Winding down his remarks, Parnell said, “The MSAs are the cornerstone of the Department’s efforts to produce the world-class military officers required to lead a ready, lethal fighting force that is prepared to deter war and defend our nation. Policies like this enable the Department to develop a strong officer corps, foster a culture of excellence, and achieve the mission, now and in the future.”
