Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently appeared to support a controversial California bill that would extend financial resources to illegal immigrants to buy homes. Appearing on Bill Maher’s talk show, the California Democrat indicated that she would “like to move them to documented,” when speaking about illegal immigrants.
The bill in question is AB 1840, which was recently passed by California lawmakers. The measure would require the California Housing Finance Authority’s home purchase assistance program, also known as the California Dream for All Program to include illegal immigrants. This would provide undocumented migrants seeking to become first-time homebuyers access to taxpayer-funded loans.
During the conversation, Pelosi advocated for providing citizenship to illegal immigrants, stating, “What I would like to do is move them to documented. One of the best things we can do for our economy is pass comprehensive immigration reform.” Maher questioned Pelosi on her stance regarding the passage of AB 1840.
“That’s kind of a different place than the Democratic Party used to be on immigration, is it not?” Maher asked the former speaker. “Well, let me just say, immigration had always been a bipartisan issue,” Pelosi replied. “But not free housing,” Maher fired back. The California Democrat further maintained that America should keep it’s door “open” to the world.
Pelosi responded, “Well, that’s not free housing. It’s the American Dream being available to more people. But understand this about immigration. The best speech when immigration was by President Ronald Reagan. ‘This is the last speech I will make as President of the United States. I want to communicate a message to the country I love.’ And he talked about the Statue of Liberty and the Beacon of Hope it is to the world and what America was preeminent to the world because our door was always open. And we will cease to be preeminent when we shut the door.”
Pelosi continued, drawing on the comments of past Republican politicians, as if to convince modern conservatives that their stance on immigration is misaligned with their party’s history. She also suggested that California is always trailblazing with its diversity efforts, hoping the rest of the nation will follow.
“Now, I don’t do justice to the Great Communicator. Google it. It’s a fabulous speech, and George Herbert Walker Bush continued in that respect for the diversity of America and the rest. California is always in the lead. Maybe others will follow that lead, but that’s up to those states. But we are very blessed here with beautiful diversity,” she said.
“So you’d vote for this law?” Maher probed. “Well, I’m not familiar with exactly what that is, but making the American dream of homeownership available to all people is something we have to do for people who are here now,” Pelosi responded. Maher pushed back emphasizing that she is calling for non-citizens to receive taxpayer resources. “This is before you’re a citizen. This is for the undocumented,” he said. Pelosi then made her comment about desiring to extend documentation to illegal immigrants and make them documented.
