On July 2, 2026, Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), who lost his bid for reelection to Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in the GOP primary, gave some unfiltered thoughts about the chances of the SAVE America Act passing, before going on to discuss the latest polling in the Senate race between Paxton and Democratic nominee James Talarico.
The battle between Cornyn and Paxton was equal parts bitter and brutal to say the least. Cornyn was viewed by many within the Republican establishment to be the stronger of the two candidates, especially in the general election against Talarico. Paxton was viewed as having less of a chance of victory due to a series of scandals, lawsuits, and various other controversies, including a messy divorce that is still pending, however, MAGA supporters stood by him because of his adherence to President Donald Trump’s America First agenda.
Earlier in the primary, President Trump declined to endorse a candidate. This created a firestorm of rumors that he was going to endorse Cornyn, but just days before the runoff, with polling showing that Paxton was well ahead of Cornyn, Trump gave the attorney general his backing. Things on the Democratic side were quite a bit different. State Rep. James Talarico defeated Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) by a comfortable margin to become the nominee.
According to a report from Mediaite, Crockett got on social media platform X following her loss and called for her followers to “remain united” and “rally around our nominees.” On July 2, Cornyn kicked off his morning by sharing a link to an op-ed piece written by Karl Rove, which referred to the concept of “Heritage Americans” being pushed by Vice President JD Vance as an “un-American idea.”

He then shared an article from The New York Times that featured the headline, “How a Nation of Immigrants Traces Its Roots.” Both posts have only served to vindicate MAGA voters who chose to support Paxton over the incumbent senator as they showcase his lack of support for strict immigration enforcement and election integrity.

Cornyn then put the SAVE America Act in his crosshairs, sharing an article from Politico that refers to the legislation as the “GOP’s dirty little secret” and says that it’s a bill that “can’t even pass the House.” When conservatives pushed back against this last post, drawing severe criticism from a number of MAGA supporters, Cornyn simply shrugged them off.
"Their outrage has obscured an inconvenient truth for the Republicans locking arms with the president to push for the bill: It can’t even pass the House — at least not the version Trump is pushing."

“Absurd,” he replied. “You just can’t handle the facts.” He then posted a clip from the film A Few Good Men, featuring actor Jack Nicholson uttering the famous line, “You can’t handle the truth!” Mediaite reached out to Cornyn for a comment on his posts, but he did not answer those questions. He did, however, respond to the current polling that shows Talarico and Paxton are tied.
“I’m not gonna say I told you so, but…Ominous for down ballot races,” the senator said. The comments on his posts were mostly critical. “You truly are the backstabbing POS we all knew you to be!” one user wrote. “This is exactly why we voted you out. You don’t follow the will of the people, you think you’re smarter than us. That’s the problem when people spend too much time in Congress. They think they’re there to represent their personal views when they’re supposed to be representing their constituents,” Texas Buckeye replied.
