Shoppers recently criticized changes that Costco is allegedly set to make with its beloved muffins that customers cherish. A recent thread on Reddit featured a lengthy discussion about the famous muffin lineup, where new flavors may substitute some of the old. According to reports, Costco introduced lemon raspberry and butter pecan muffins sold in eight-count packages that are supposedly smaller.
Furthermore, some claims suggest that two new flavors, triple chocolate and blueberries and cream will replace others such as lemon raspberry and butter pecan. Reportedly, these selections will replace banana nut, apple crumb, vanilla chocolate chunk, and almond poppyseed muffins. Supposedly, these flavor changes are being tested in select Texas locations.
One user on read shared a lengthy post with their observations on the muffins. “I became a Costco Member from the Day they over took Price Club 30 years ago. One of the MAIN REASONS I became a Member was the ability to buy the MUFFINS they WERE FAMOUS FOR. Yesterday when I was notified about the change of there muffins with size, quantity and price, I was VERY UPSET about it,” they wrote.
Opining that Costco is starting to sacrifice its values, they said, “Costco is Slowly starting down the path that had led to the demise of many other businesses. They up the price for membership. They discontinue carrying other products that were a big draw to membership and now, Downsizing the Signature Costco Muffins.”
They continued, “Costco is getting to be more like a Walmart. And I do not pay for a Membership at Walmart. And Walmart’s Muffins are the same, and they offer more food items which can lead me to rethink why am I spending money for a Membership when I can apply the $60 towards my food bill somewhere else. COSTCO take notice. I am calling you out. BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL MUFFINGS and quit getting to be like other businesses LIKE Von’s and Ralphs and Kroger’s and other grocery chains the skimp on quantity and change a higher price.”
The discussion sparked a slew of comments weighing in on the controversy. “A better way to get results is to go on Costco.com, find the customer service button (not feedback, as that’s only about the website functionality) choose your location from the stores, and tell them what you think. This goes to the people who can actually aggregate opinions and make changes,” one person wrote.
Pushing back on some of the sentiment, another person said, “I’m gonna say it and I’ll probably be downvoted but the original muffins weren’t that good. They were also too damn big and we never finished them. People say to freeze them but that made them taste even worse. I’m excited for the change. Maybe we will finally be able to finish a whole pack before they go bad and I won’t have to throw away.”
One user suggested that the supposed decline in muffin quality has been a long time coming. “Slowly? This has been a steady descent since the stock was discovered. The prices are the same as the grocery store at this point.nThe quality and exclusivity are what is really on decline at this point. We’re creeping toward that line where membership isn’t worth it. The crowds at every hour of the day aren’t helping, although I guess the unwashed masses means more profit,” they posted.
