Country folk singer Oliver Anthony just rocketed to the top of the charts thanks to his song “Rich Men North of Richmond,” which expressed just what many on the MAGA right and even populist left feel about Washington, D.C., which is that its a swamp full of corrupt oligarchs looking to make a buck of the American people.
“It’s a damn shame what the world’s gotten to / For people like me and people like you / Wish I could just wake up and it not be true / But it is, oh, it is,” the chorus to the song goes. “Livin’ in the new world / With an old soul /These rich men north of Richmond / Lord knows they all just wanna have total control / Wanna know what you think, wanna know what you do / And they don’t think you know, but I know that you do / ‘Cause your dollar ain’t shit and it’s taxed to no end / ‘Cause of rich men north of Richmond,” Anthony sings.

As could be expected, the chord that song struck led to a huge outpouring of support for Anthony from the online, populist right. For example, Daily Wire host Matt Walsh posted about the song on X, saying, “This is the kind of country music I like.”
Walsh later shared that he had listened to Anthony’s other songs and found them great as well, saying, “Happy to report that his other songs are great too. Raw and poetic. The man expresses the pain that many forgotten Americans live with every day.”
TPUSA personality and conservative Twitter commentator Benny Johnson also posted in support of Anthony, saying, “‘Rich Men North of Richmond’ is the most listened to track in the world in the past 24 hours. This American working-man’s protest song has millions & millions of plays. Sung by an off-the-grid farmer in the countryside with his dogs.Follow Oliver Anthony at: @AintGottaDollar”
Benny highlighted Anthony’s massive success in another post, saying, “🚨BREAKING: “Rich Men North Of Richmond” is the NUMBER ONE song in America. But wait, there’s more! Oliver Anthony — a rural Farmer unknown just 48 hours ago — has THREE SONGS (!!!) in the Top 10. The most famous musicians on earth often never achieve this. Culture is Power”
The Blaze’s Glenn Beck joined in and praised the song on X as well, saying, “This is the voice of much of America. Oliver Anthony Thank you for your voice.”
Jack Posobiec also posted about the song on X. His reaction to it was, “Don’t even remember the last time a new song hit me like this,” he said, and then sarcastically adding, “Be a shame if this anthem went absolutely viral.”
Anthony later thanked everyone for their support in a tweet, saying, “Your emails and messages are touching me in a major way. So much love. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. P.S. Media people, end requests and inquiries to [email protected] only please”
Anthony also posted a video in which he thanked everyone and spoke about what’s coming next, saying, “Y’all are crazy. Somebody just sent me a screenshot that Richmond north of Richmond is number one on iTunes. And I don’t even have words I don’t even know.”
