Euclid, Ohio, police officer Jacob Derbin was killed on the night of Saturday, May 9. He appears to have been killed in an ambush by a convicted felon who was wanted for violating the conditions of his community supervision. That convicted felon was later identified by the Euclid Police Department as Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, and he was soon found deceased in a residence.
Officer Derbin had been on the Euclid Police Department Force for but 10 months when he was slain, leaving behind a fiance, Liv Wuebker. They planned to be married on July 27 in Minister, Ohio, Fox News Digital reported. Liv Wuebker’s brother, Skylar, wrote, “An awful tragedy. We are going to miss you Jacob. Thank for serving your country in Kuwait, and continuing to serve and protect your community when you came back. Most of all, thank you for coming into our family and loving all of us. Especially Liv. You’ll always be part of our family, and forever my first brother. We will always miss you.”
Ohio’s political leaders got involved in commenting on the matter as well. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost released a statement on the tragic murder of Officer Derbin, saying, “The promise to protect is signed with the blood of our officers. The killer who ambushed Officer Derbin will be found and will receive the full measure of justice.”
Continuing, Attorney General Yost wrote, “It is a cruel irony that a mother lost her son on Mother’s Day, and that this murder happened just as we prepare to solemnize our fallen during Police Memorial Week. My heart burns with anger at this injustice, for the family of this young officer and the Euclid Police Department.”
Ohio AG Yost continued, “The Euclid Police Department requested assistance from the Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation to investigate the officer-involved critical incident. BCI’s investigation is active and ongoing.”
Similarly, Gov. DeWine of Ohio posted about Officer Derbin’s murder on Sunday afternoon in a post on X, saying, “Fran and I offer our deepest condolences to Euclid Police Officer Jacob Derbin’s family and his brothers and sisters at @Euclid_PD. His bravery and dedication to the Euclid community will not be forgotten.”
Further, included in that post was an image of a statement that provided, “In honor of the life and service of Euclid Police Officer Jacob Derbin, I hereby proclaim, by the authority vested in me as the Governor of the State of Ohio by the Ohio Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that the flags of the United States and the State of Ohio shall be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout Cuyahoga County, the Ohio Statehouse, the Vern Riffe Center, and the Rhodes State Office Tower today, and will remain until sunset on the day of his funeral. All other public buildings and grounds throughout the state may fly the flags of the United States and the State of Ohio at half-staff at their discretion for the same time period.”
The Euclid Police Department, in a Monday post on Facebook, wrote, “Officer Derbin was proudly sworn in to the Euclid Police Department on July 24th, 2023. During his brief time with the department, he served the residents and business owners of Euclid, as well as his fellow Officers with dedication, honor, and professionalism. His kind heart and enormous smile were infectious. The world was a better place with him in it and he will be desperately missed by all who knew him. Officer Jacob Derbin #14, End of Watch, May 11th, 2024.”
