Recently, Maureen Dowd, a New York Times columnist, claimed that President Biden was forced out of the 2024 race in a “coup” orchestrated by high-ranking Democrats. Following the infamous debate against former President Donald Trump in late June, there were incessant calls for Joe Biden to withdraw from his reelection bid. Upon Biden dropping out last month, many have speculated he was ousted by members of his party behind the scenes.
“Even though it was the right thing to do, because Joe Biden was not going to be able to campaign, much less serve as president for another four years, in a fully vital way, it was a jaw-dropping putsch,” Dowd wrote in the piece. “At some point, when the polls cratered, Democratic mandarins decided to put the welfare of the party — and the country — ahead of the president’s ego, and stop catering to his self-regarding fantasy that he was the only one who could beat Donald Trump,” the columnist continued.
Dowd specifically called out Nancy Pelosi, who reportedly hasn’t spoken to Biden since he withdrew from the race. “One of the most ruthless and successful tacticians in congressional history seemed sheepish about knifing her pal, and conflicted over whether to take credit. Et tu, Nancy? Biden must have thought,” she continued.
The opinion author also noted that the high-ranking Democrats suspected of ousting Biden were slow to endorse the vice president. “Kamala can’t be thrilled that Obama, Pelosi and Schumer hesitated to endorse her because they wanted more moderate rivals to compete in an open mini-primary. And Biden and Harris staffs are also tetchy, as Kamala layers on her own people,” Dowd said.
However, Dowd maintained that the Dems made the right decision to oust Biden as he would have faced certain defeat at the hands of former President Trump later this year. “Those who pushed out Biden should be proud,” she claimed. “They saved him and their party from a likely crushing defeat, letting Trump snake back in and soil democracy.”
The American Tribune recently reported on comments from Trump, who also indicated that Biden dropping out of the race was the result of an organized coup. “I think it was a coup. They didn’t want him running. He was way down in the polls, and they thought he was going to lose,” the Republican presidential candidate said about Biden.
The former president continued, “They went to him, and they said, ‘you can’t win the race,’ which I think is true, unless I did something very foolish, which I wasn’t going to do, and I think he was so far down, and they said, ‘You’re not going to win, and you’re not in great shape, and you did poorly in the debate.’ I think the debate started everything.”
Trump added, “I know a lot of people on the other side, too, that they went, and they forced him out between Pelosi and Obama and some others that you see on television. It was interesting. I’d watch them on television, and they act so nice. ‘Oh, yes, we loved you — we loved you behind the scenes.’ I know for a fact they were brutal.”
