New York City is a sanctuary city, which means that it does not work with federal immigration officers to deport or otherwise prosecute, for immigration crimes, those illegal immigrants in it. While that lets its residents pat themselves on the back and self-assuredly screech, “no human is illegal,” it also means that the crime brought but such people is something up with which they must put.
Such could be seen in the latest stomach-churning story out of the Rotten Apple, this one about an illegal immigrant named Daniel Hernandez Martinez. Mr. Hernandez has, despite the welcoming attitude and generosity on display from New York, managed to already get arrested six times in just two short months of being there.
Commenting on Mr. Hernandez and what he means for the city, one police officer quoted by the New York Post said, “He’s been wreaking havoc.” Continuing, that officer, who has more than 20 years on the job, said, “This is not an isolated incident. These migrants are getting arrested quite often here, and we really don’t know who they are. They really don’t have ID. They’re not being vetted properly, but some of them are committing some of the most violent crimes here.”
Mr. Hernandez’s crime spree started at a Brooklyn Costco, where he stole a slew of items, including razor blades. Though charged with petty larceny, he was released on his own recognizance. While on his own recognizance, he proceeded to steal a “tool kit” from a Manhattan Duane Reade shop.
Next, he escalated his crime spree significantly, pulling out a large knife and wielding it while advancing toward an undercover officer in a Duane Reed store when a security guard tried to stop him from stealing a bad of chips and tube of toothpaste.
Despite the bloody mess he could have caused, Mr. Hernandez, an illegal immigrant who shouldn’t have even been in the US, much less on the streets committing crimes, was once again released on his own recognizance.
The crime spree didn’t end there. Next, he stuck with assault and attacked a journalist, Jeffrey Bradac, with a bike tire while outside a hotel being used as a migrant shelter in Times Square. Mr. Bradac, describing the random and vicious attack, said, “I did a nice interview with the guy. He hit me with the bike tire and I called police. Then, he jumped the dumpster and a really fit cop ran after him but the guy got away.”
Keeping up his violent antics, Mr. Hernandez next attached a woman in Midtown, New York City. He kicked her while dragging her by her hair and smashed her phone. That time he was placed on supervised release. But that was no deterrent and he next threatened a stranger with a chain. That was still enough to lock him up and he was instead released with no bail.
Finally. the was arrested for using a large metal pipe to break the locks off of bicycles in Times Square, which he presumably intended to steal. Finally, a judge sent Martinez to Rikers Island and so he’s unable, for a brief moment, at least, to prey on New York residents.
