Since Joe Biden took office and effectively undid all of the good of the Trump Administration, the borders have been wide open, and illegal immigration has exploded. Subsequently, Southern border towns have been overrun, and now larger liberal cities are feeling the impact as well. There simply is no more room at the inn in some cities.
One such city is New York. The Big Apple, which once prided itself on its tolerance and acceptance of immigrants, is now overcrowded, overburdened, and unsafe, mainly in part due to the influx of immigrants. While the city is getting almost no support from the White House, Mayor Eric Adams has come up with a unique solution, at least in the short term.
In order to combat the influx and offer relief to the city’s overburdened services, Adams is offering free one-way plane tickets to immigrants to a destination of their choice, anywhere in the world! The city has been sending migrants who have been displaced from city shelters to a “reticketing” office devoted to booking one-way tickets to anywhere but New York City.
Many migrants have been choosing destinations like Morocco and Columbia. City Hall spokesperson Kayla Mamelak said: “With no sign of a decompression strategy in the near future, we have established a reticketing center for migrants. Here, the city will redouble efforts to purchase tickets for migrants to help them take the next steps in their journeys.”
It is apparent that the next step doesn’t include the Big Apple. Mayor Eric Adams has been warning folks that the inn is running out of rooms for weeks. He recently said: “When you are out of room, that means you’re out of room. Every year, my relatives show up for Thanksgiving, and they want to all sleep at my house. There’s no more room. That’s where we are right now.”
Since last year, more than 130,000 migrants have flooded the city, most of which are still being housed courtesy of New York’s taxpayers. However, shelters are hitting capacity, and with few other options, a one-way plane ticket seems to be the only short-term solution.
The city even resorted to sending flyers to the southern border, warning would-be travelers that the city wasn’t guaranteeing housing or services. However, that hasn’t appeared to do much good, as a reported 600 or more migrants arrive in the Big Apple every day.
New York has already spent an estimated $1.2 billion and is projected to spend up to $5 billion, most of which is coming out of taxpayer’s pockets. Adams added: “This issue will destroy New York City,” Adams said last month. “We’re getting 10,000 migrants a month. … Every community in this city is going to be impacted.”
It’s a crisis that isn’t going away anytime soon. Major liberal cities that once were far removed from the problems of the southern border are now affected daily thanks to the president they helped elect. Sadly for them, Joe Biden has shown no desire to stem the tide of immigration and secure the southern border.
It is tempting to simply say, “Voting has consequences,” even though people are suffering. Is it bad enough to elicit a change in 2024? That remains to be seen, so for now, cities like New York are left to fend for themselves and find creative ways to deal with what southern border towns have been dealing with for years.
