New York City Mayor Eric Adams recently indicated that he was not outright opposed to the idea of joining the Republican Party during an interview on Spectrum New NY1. Adams emphasized that he identified with the “American Party” and would align with whatever party would best protect and serve the citizens of the United States.
Notably, Adams was a registered Republican between 1995 and 2002, prompting the question of whether he would ever consider returning to the opposite side of the aisle. “Would you ever consider rejoining the GOP?” Adams was asked by the host. Not ruling out the possibility, Adams responded that he would do whatever represented his love for America.
“The party that’s the most important for me is the American Party,” Adams replied. “I’m a part of the American Party. I love this country. This is the home of the free, land of the brave. My 19-year-old nephew died on the fields of Vietnam protecting what this city and this country represents, and that’s the party I’m going to always be a member of.”
The clip from the interview quickly spread across social media, garnering a variety of reactions. Some saw Adams’s comment as a sign of hope for the Big Apple. “NEW YORK NEEDS A GOOD REPUBLICAN MAYOR TO TURN THAT CITY AROUND,” one person said. Another person added, “MAGA welcomes Mayor Adam’s back to the republican party if he wants.”
Another comment speculated whether the GOP could do the impossible and govern New York City. “Redemption arc? Considering how impossible it is for Republicans to win NYC, this is better than nothing. It’s not realistic to expect a MAGA mayor in NYC! Most liberals won’t budge regardless how bad things get. He’s at least reconsidering his past decisions,” the comment read.
However, some remained skeptical about the prospect of Adams becoming a Republican. Political operative and Trump loyalist Roger Stone commented, “The guy supported New York City being a sanctuary city and said all illegals were welcome. He has two sexual assault complaints against him which New York City taxpayers are paying to defend him from.. He will never be the Republican nominee for mayor. He is going to federal prison.”
The American Tribune reported on recent comments from Adams when the New York City mayor defended Trump from hostile rhetoric spewed against him. “No, I defended the rhetoric that we use it across our country, and what our children are listening to, what we’re doing. We’ve reached a point in this country we no longer want to engage in conversation. They were even calling him Hitler. That’s an insult that,” he said.
Watch Adams speak about joining the GOP:
Adams continued, “That was an insult to the millions of Jews and others who died. We know what Hitler did and what I said to our country when I’m on the streets talking to my young people who are protesting on college campuses wearing Hamas of signs and calling for the destructions of groups. I said, we have to bring down this rhetoric. We have to start engaging in conversation. You know, Obama said it right, and I agree. This is not the divided state. This is the United States. We’re the greatest country on the globe, and people are watching us and calling, name calling.”
