New York City has faced an unprecedented crisis from the influx of thousands of migrants. Gov. Kathy Hochul, who once took pride in New York’s status as a sanctuary state, now delivers a much less welcoming message to migrants: “Go somewhere else.”
Hochul pointed out that New York is becoming severely strained as its infrastructure struggles to keep up with the new addition of migrants. New York City already faces extraordinarily high levels of homelessness, and the newfound crisis isn’t helping.
“If you’re going to leave your country, go somewhere else,” Hochul stated. “We have to let the word out that when you come to New York, you’re not going to have more hotel rooms. We don’t have capacity, so we have to also message properly.” The governor added, “The smarter thing is to apply for asylum before you leave your country.”
Conservatives in New York have criticized Hochul for the backfiring sanctuary city status of the Big Apple. A group of eight senators wrote a letter to the governor earlier this month demanding that New York City reverse the sanctuary city policy, claiming it only worsens the crisis at hand.
“New York City’s leaders chose to be a sanctuary city, putting out a welcome mat for every migrant who arrives in the country. They chose virtue signaling over good government policy, and so must bear the consequences,” the Republicans said in their letter. “That in no way affords you or Mayor Adams the luxury of transferring the impacts of your failed policies onto our suburban communities.”
The American Tribune reported earlier this month on statements made by New York City Mayor Eric Adams regarding the state of the migrant crisis. The mayor appeared distressed, offering a gloomy outlook for his city, claiming it would be “destroyed” if the situation is not mitigated.
“Let me tell you something, New Yorkers. Never in my life have I had a problem that I did not see an ending to. I don’t see an ending to this. I don’t see an ending to this. This issue will destroy New York City. Destroy New York City,” Adams said. “We’re getting 10,000 migrants a month … Now we’re getting people from all over the globe have made their minds up that they’re going to come through the southern part of the border and come into New York City.”
Adams warned residents of New York City that they would feel the impact of the influx of migrants, stating they would show in their neighborhoods. According to Adams, the city has seen an increase of almost 100,000 migrants. “It’s going to come to your neighborhoods. All of us are going to be impacted by this. I said it last year when we had 15,000. I’m telling you now with 110,000. The city we knew, we’re about to lose.”
It seemed as if Democrats were completely content when red states were feeling similar crises along the southern border. However, they sing a much different tune when the problem is placed in their backyard.
